Tips for Wiring a Tow Bar

Wiring lights and brakes in a tow bar can be confusing. Different colored wires must be used, and different gauges as well. Furthermore, the wire must have the correct insulation. The task seems daunting at first. If you break it down into steps, and use some practical tips, the task that first looked daunting becomes easy.

Mount Lights First

    Mount all the lights first. That way, you have good points of erence to run the wires to. Furthermore, by mounting the lights first, you are able to plan the routing of the wires accordingly.

Use Rubber Grommets

    If wires must be ran inside the chassis, use rubber grommets on the drilled holes where the wires run through. You never want wires to rub on bare metal, since over time chafing occurs. Rubber grommets are inexpensive and readily available at any electrical supply house or trailer parts stores.

Use Correct Gauge

    Use the correct gauge wire for the amperage load. For lights, 18 to 12 gauge wire is recommended. Eighteen gauge is the thinnest to 12 gauge being the thickest. RV manufacturers recommend 14 gauge for vehicle lights. If you are building a heavy duty electrical system, use 14 gauge wire for lights, and 12 gauge for the main power lines.

Understand Color Codes

    Vehicle color codes are standardized for trailers and towing equipment. White colored wire is used for ground. Red colored is used for main power. Green is used for right turn lights, and yellow for left turn. Brown wire is used for tail and marker lights.

DRZ 400 Battery Wiring

DRZ 400 Battery Wiring

The DRZ 400 is a motocross bike that is as comfortable on the street as it is on the track. Japanese manufacturer Suzuki built the bike with a 400-cubic-centimeter engine. It is no longer in production, haven given way to a newer model with a 450-cc engine displacement. Like most modern motorcycles, the battery is wired using two terminals, one positive and one negative. It is best operated with a maintenance-free 12-volt motorcycle battery that requires no acid pack for activation and no assembly after purchase.

Instructions

    1

    Remove the screw that secures a cover panel on the rear-left side of the DRZ 400, just in front of the rear wheel. Pull the cover panel off to reveal the battery compartment.

    Slide a battery into the compartment with the terminals facing up and out.

    Slip the rectangular nut into the positive terminal, which is indicated by a "+" sign. Hold the positive (red) battery cable on top of the terminal and drop the battery screw through the cable and into the nut. Tighten the screw by turning clockwise with a screwdriver until the screw and cable are secure against the terminal.

    Repeat Step 4 for the negative (black) battery cable on the DRZ 400.

    Place the rubber terminal covers over the battery and the battery protector on top of the terminal covers. Press the decorative cover plate over the battery compartment and replace the screw by turning clockwise with a screwdriver until the cover is snug against the frame of the bike.
