Metric Vs U S Bolt Torque Specs
When discussing engine maintenance, torque ers to the amount of force required to rotate a bolt around a fixed point or axis. In the United States, the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) issues standards for bolt and torque specifications; in most other countries, especially European ones, they use metric equivalents.
Metric Dimensions
In metric units, bolts are listed according to three parameters. The first reading is the major thread diameter, listed in millimeters. The second value represents the distance between the threads, in millimeters. The third value represents the bolts length in millimeters. A metric label for a bolt might look like this: M8-1.25x25.
U.S. Dimensions
U.S., or SAE, bolt dimensions are listed according to three parameters. The first value represents the major thread diameter in inches. The second value is the number of threads in the bolt per inch. The third value indicates the bolts length in inches. An SAE label for a bolt might look like this: 5/16-18 1-1/2.
Pound-Feet vs. Netwon Meters
In U.S. units, torque is generally listed in pound-feet (lb.-ft.) or less commonly in pound-inches (lb-in.). In metric units, the same values are listed in Newton-meters (nm). To convert lb-ft. to nm, multiply the value by 1.356. To convert nm to lb-ft., multiply the value by 0.738. To convert lb-in. to nm, multiply the value by 0.113. To convert nm to lb-in., multiply the value by 8.851.

How to Change a Muffler on an S 10
While the muffler on your Chevy S-10 pickup does cut down the noise coming out of your exhaust, it also helps provide the proper back pressure and flow of exhaust gases out of the engine. The muffler and exhaust are designed to work with the engine to scavenge gases and allow more air and fuel to be fed in. If the exhaust has too much back pressure, it will reduce the intake capacity, and the engine in your S-10 will not run properly.
Instructions
- 1
Raise the rear of the truck off the ground using a jack then position a set of jack stands under the frame to support the truck. Remove the jack and set it aside.
2Locate the muffler at the rear of the truck. It connects to a flange at the rear of the catalytic converter and has several rubber hangers supporting it.
3Locate the two retaining bolts that join the muffler to the back of the catalytic converter. Remove the bolts by turning them counterclockwise with a ratchet and socket then separate the two flanges. Let the front of the muffler hang down.
4Move to the body of the muffler and locate the two rubber isolators that support the muffler from above it on the frame. Remove the rubber isolators from the hanger pins on the muffler and lower the muffler down then remove it from under the truck.
5Position a new muffler under your S-10 and raise it up to the rubber isolators. Push the mounting pins on the muffler into the rubber isolators on the frame.
6Raise the front of the muffler up and mate the flange on the muffler to the flange on the catalytic converter. Install the two mounting bolts in the flanges and tighten the flange mounting bolts to 30 foot-pounds with a torque wrench.
7Support the rear of the truck with a jack and remove the jack stands. Lower the truck to the ground and start the engine, listening for leaks in the exhaust.

How to Remove S 10 Headliners
Removal of a Chevy S-10 headliner may be required for a variety of reasons. Fortunately, the procedure is quick and not particularly difficult. Care should be taken, however, if the headliner is to be retained, because headliners are nothing more than shaped foam boards that have felt material glued to one side. Breaking them is easy to do, and they may not be repaired once broken.
Instructions
- 1
Loosen the two front trim posts of the S-10s interior; they are difficult to remove entirely. Remove the rear two trim posts.
2Position the seats all the way forward to give yourself room to work.
3Unscrew and remove the dome light from above the rear window of the truck. Remove the screws securing the sun visors and remove the visors.
4Pull the headliner down from the back of the cab of the truck. The front of the headliner will slide out from the front trim panels. Turn the headliner on its side and remove it through either side door.

How to Install a Fuel Pump Module on a 98 S 10
The Chevrolet S-10 is a compact pickup truck that General Motors manufactured from 1982 to 2004 in the United States. It had a 6-cylinder 4.3-liter engine with sequential fuel injection, which requires a high-pressure electric fuel pump. The fuel pump in a 1998 Chevrolet S-10 is attached to the fuel tank. This requires you to remove the fuel tank before you can install the fuel pump.
Instructions
- 1
Disconnect the cable from the batterys negative terminal with a socket wrench to prevent starting the engine accidentally. Open the fuel tanks filler cap to relieve the pressure in the fuel tank.
2Siphon the fuel through the filler tube with a hose and drain the fuel into a gasoline container. Raise the rear of the truck with a jack and support it on jack stands. Remove the plastic tank from the fuel tank with a socket wrench. Release the clamp for the fuel tanks filler hose and disconnect the filler hose.
3Disconnect the electrical wiring and fuel lines from the fuel tank. Support the fuel tank with a floor jack and remove the fuel tank straps with a socket wrench. Lower the fuel tank slightly with the floor jack. Detach the electrical connections and fuel lines from the fuel sending unit. Lower the fuel tank completely with the floor jack and move it to your work area.
4Turn the locking ring for the fuel sending unit counterclockwise with tool No. J-24187. Remove the locking ring from the fuel sending unit and lift the fuel sending unit out of the fuel tank. Discard the O-ring for the fuel sender unit. Pull the fuel pump into the mounting tube as you pull it away from the bottom support. Pull the fuel pump out of the rubber connector once it clears the bottom support.
5Install the new fuel pump and O-ring by performing steps one through four in reverse order. Start the engine and check for fuel leaks.

How to Remove the Taillight for a 1997 Chevy S 10
Removing the taillights from your 1997 Chevy S-10 pickup to replace the bulbs or complete assemblies takes just a few minutes. The taillights on the S-10 use standard 3157 dual-filament bulbs available from any auto parts store. The taillight housing also contains a 921 bulb that illuminates when you shift the truck into reverse. If the entire assembly requires replacement, salvage yards, the dealer or some auto parts stores can provide a new assembly.
Instructions
- 1
Open the tailgate of your S-10, and allow it to rest on the support cables. Locate the two retaining bolts on the inside edge of the tailgate opening, near the latch.
2Remove the two retaining bolts with a 10-millimeter socket and ratchet. Set the bolts aside so you can reuse them later.
3Grasp the taillight assembly from the rear, then pull it straight back from the bedside, removing the assembly from the truck until you can access the wiring on the back.
4Grasp the bulb sockets, rotate them counterclockwise and remove them from the rear of the taillight assembly. Remove the taillight assembly from the truck.
