How to Remove an EGR Valve from a 1999 Lincoln Town Car

Replacing the Exhaust-Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve on a 1999 Lincoln Town Car 4.6-liter engine will give the car greater fuel mileage and allow it to run more smoothly. The EGR recycles unburned fuel from the exhaust gasses back into the engine. A bad EGR can stop a car altogether, as it is part of the exhaust output and the engines vacuum intake system. Replacing the E.G.R. valve should take no longer than two hours if you have never done this type of work before. The tools and materials for this project are available at an auto parts store.

Instructions

Open the hood. Locate and remove the vacuum hose from the top of the EGR valve. The EGR. valve looks like a miniature flying saucer and is located on the top drivers side of the engine.

Remove the small electrical harness from the EGR. valve with your hand. Thoroughly saturate all of the connections to the EGR. with rust penetrant or WD-40. Let it stand for five minutes.

Remove the EGR mounting bolts using a 3/8-inch drive ratchet and socket.

Free the EGR. valve from the EGR tube, using two open-end wrenches. The EGR tube is the protrusion from the bottom of the valve. Hold the EGR. tube completely still during this step so as not to fracture or break the tube. The tube extends all the way to the catalytic converter; you cannot buy it separately from the converter. Spin the E.G.R. counterclockwise to remove it.

Install the new EGR, reversing the steps to remove it. Install the EGR tube connection first. Install the EGR mounting bolts and tighten them between 30 to 50 foot-pounds of torque.

Reinstall the small vacuum tube. Snap the electrical connector onto the new EGR valve.

How to Change Headlights in 2002 Town and Country

The 2002 Chrysler Town and Country uses an integrated two-filament headlight to supply both low and high beams in one unit. The halogen headlight lights at excessive temperatures from the internal gases inside the bulb. Consequently, contact with the glass with hands, perspiration or dirt will damage the bulb. Avoid contact with the replacement bulb or clean the bulb with distilled alcohol and a clean cloth. The procedure to replace the bulb in the Town and Country is the same as the Dodge Grand Caravan.

Instructions

Park the Town and Country on a level surface, apply the parking brake, make sure the headlight switch is off and open the hood.

Locate the three upper headlight assembly retaining bolts on top of the assembly support bracket. They form a triangular pattern with two of the bolts on top of the inboard side of the assembly and the last one near the outer corner of the assembly near the directional light.

Remove the three bolts with the socket wrench.

Pull the headlight assembly forward and rest it on a clean shop rag on the front bumper. The rag will help prevent scratching the bumper.

Disconnect the electrical connector behind the headlight assembly that plugs into the headlight socket. Use the screwdriver to gently lift upward on the locking clip (at the top of the plug) of the plug and pull the connector away from the socket.

Turn the headlight retaining collar counter-clockwise to remove it and access the headlight. Pull the headlight out of the headlight assembly.

Place the 9007 automotive replacement bulb into the headlight assembly (being careful not to touch the glass bulb). Align the three notches on the socket base of the headlight to the three grooves in the headlight assembly and then replace the retaining collar (turning it clockwise to lock it into place).

Test the headlight for operation before reinstalling the headlight assembly and retaining bolts.

How to Reset the 2005 Town Country Car

You can reset the computer on your 05 Town & Country car using an OBD II scan tool. When a warning or service light is illuminated on the vehicles instrument panel, a trouble code has been sent to the onboard diagnostics (OBD) computer from a sensor. These codes help you troubleshoot problems with the car. The OBD II scan tool can be purchased online or from an auto parts store. Reset the computer only after you have finished servicing or repairing the vehicle, or you risk damaging the Town & Countrys computer.

Instructions

Find the OBD diagnostic port on the underside of the drivers dash, next to the steering column. Its the same size and shape as the OBD II scan tools connector. Plug the OBD II scan tool into this port.

Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the "ACC" position, but dont start the engine. This will turn on the scan tool.

Wait for the tool to interface with the computer and retrieve the codes. Find the command "Delete Codes" or "Erase Codes" on the scan tool and select it. Wait for the tool to erase the codes. When it has finished, it will display "OK" or return you to the main menu.

Unplug the tool and start the engine. Verify that all service and warning lights have shut off on the instrument cluster.
