How to Check the Error Codes for the 2002 Toyota Corolla
You can check the error codes on your 2002 Toyota Corolla from your garage, saving you time and money. The 2002 Toyota Corolla comes standard with an On-Board Diagnostics II computer (OBD II) that retrieves and stores all codes sent to it from sensors positioned throughout the car. When these sensors find a problem with the car, they send the code to the OBD II computer which, in turn, lights up a warning or service light on the instrument panel. You can retrieve these codes with a small, computerized device called an OBD II code scanner, which you can purchase at any auto parts store.
Instructions
- 1
Locate a port on the under side of the drivers side dashboard. It is near the steering column.
2Plug the OBD II code scanner carefully into this port.
3Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the "ON" position. Dont crank the engine.
4Wait while the code scanner powers on. Some scanners need to be turned on manually with a switch. If so, turn it on.
5Select "Retrieve Codes" or a similar command. Wait for the scanner to interface with the vehicles computer, then write the alphanumeric codes down on a piece of paper.
6Look up the codes in the scanners manual to find out their meaning. Unplug the code scanner and take the vehicle to be serviced or repaired by a qualified mechanic.
