Tools for Alignment

Tools for Alignment

The alignment of a vehicle is the angle at which each tire sits. There are three different angles when alignment readings are taken: camber, caster and toe. Camber is the lean of the tires looking from the front of the vehicle. Toe is the direction the tires are pointing from above the vehicle. Caster is the forward or backward lean of the tires from the side of the vehicle; this is not adjustable without aftermarket parts.

Combination Wrench

A combination wrench is used in tight areas.

A combination wrench has both an open and a boxed end on it, both of which are the same size. They come in standard and metric sizes. Combination wrenches are primarily used to loosen the locking nut on the tie rod ends so that the toe angle can be adjusted. They are also used for removing nuts and bolts.

Ratchet

A ratchet with a socket attached is a very useful tool.
A ratchet with a socket attached is a very useful tool.

The ratchet is used in combination with a socket to turn nuts and bolts. It has a ratcheting mechanism inside so that you do not have to remove it to reposition the handle. The ratchets function in an alignment is to loosen any bolts holding components in a fixed position and to turn the camber bolts in a strut to perform camber adjustments. Ratchets come in all different lengths and have standard-sized connectors; 1/4-. 1/2-, 3/4- and 7/8-inch are the most common.

Socket

Standard-well sockets are the most commonly used sockets.
Standard-well sockets are the most commonly used sockets.

The socket is used in conjunction with the ratchet to loosen bolts and adjust the camber of most vehicles. Sockets vary in length and are primarily deep-well and standard-well. Deep-well socket are used on nuts that are attached to a long stud; this long stud requires a deeper socket. The downside of a deep-well is that you sacrifice torque, and it doesnt always fit in tight spots. The standard-well is used for all other nuts and bolts and provides maximum torque.

Pry Bar

Sometimes a little leverage is needed. This is where pry bars come in handy. These are typically used in two ways: to pry apart rusted toe-adjuster sleeves and to pry the wheel to adjust the camber. Pry bars vary in size, from just a few inches to several feet long.

Steering Wheel Lock

The steering wheel lock loops under the wheel to keep it in a straight position.
The steering wheel lock loops under the wheel to keep it in a straight position.

A key part of a good alignment is a straight steering wheel. Mechanics utilize a steering wheel lock to make certain the wheel does not move while adjusting the steering components underneath. This lock has a spring-loaded circular base that is placed on the seat and a U-shaped holder that goes under the steering wheel. The spring-loaded base presses the U-shaped holder against the steering wheel to hold it in place. Without this, the steering wheel is free to move while the alignment is being performed.

Specialty Tools

BMWs require sandbags to perform an accurate alignment.
BMWs require sandbags to perform an accurate alignment.

As with most newer cars, there are some specialty tools. The most common of these specialty tools is a sandbag. Sandbag are used in imported German sedans, such as BMWs. They are designed to simulate the weight of passengers and cargo while the aligned is being performed. The other specialty tool is for newer General Motors vehicles that are equipped with electronic steering. This tool resets the electronic steering sensor to accept the new alignment angles. If this is not used, a light will appear on the dashboard, which only the dealer can reset.

How to Replace the Transmission Lines in a Chevy Cavalier

The transmission lines on your Chevy Cavalier carry transmission fluid from the cooling core in the radiator to the transmission. As the fluid heats up in the transmission, if becomes thin and less effective; cooling it becomes necessary. But if one of your Cavaliers transmission lines is leaking or damaged, youll need to replace it. Otherwise, the transmission fluid will leak or plug and the fluid level will drop, damaging the transmission. Replacement cooling lines are available, pre-bent to fit your Cavalier, from any Chevrolet dealer.

Instructions

    1

Raise the front of your Cavalier off the ground, using a jack, and place a pair of jack stands under the frame to support the Cavalier. Position an oil drain pan under the radiator where the transmission lines meet the radiator.

    2

Loosen the fitting on the end of one transmission line at the radiator with a wrench, then pull the line down and let any transmission fluid drip into the drain pan. Move to the other end of the line, where it meets the transmission, and place a second drain pan under the lines.

    3

Loosen the fitting on the transmission end of the line youre working on, using a wrench, then pull the line out from under the car. Slide a new line in place, attaching it to the transmission first. Tighten the fitting with a wrench.

    4

Raise the line to the hole on the radiator and thread the fitting in place. Tighten the fitting with a wrench until it is tight. Repeat the process for the second line. Remove the drain pans from under the car.

    5

Raise the car off the jack stands with your jack, remove the jack stands and lower the car to the ground. Remove the jack from under the car.

How to Weld With a Bernzomatic OX 2250

The Bernzomatic OX 2250 is not the type of torch that most people associate with Bernzomatic. Instead of the typical propane cylinder topped by a burner wand, this torch operates with two cylinders. Instead of propane, it uses a MAPP gas cylinder and an oxygen cylinder connected to a burner wand by a four-foot hose. Since there is no electronic igniter on the burner wand, Bernzomatic also includes a spark lighter with the kit. Unlike other models in the Bernzomatic line, the one thing the OX 2250 does well is welding.

Instructions

    1

Clean off the steel rods with a wire brush at the welding points. Remove all rust dirt and debris from the welding area. Position the rods as desired for welding.

    2

Open the black plastic gas valve on the side of gas connection on top of the MAPP gas cylinder one-eighth of a turn. Hold the cup of the spark lighter over the end of the burner wand. Squeeze the handle of the spark lighter, which drags a flint across a knurled steel surface, causing a spark that ignites the gas. Open the gas valve until the flame stops smoking. The flame should be approximately eight inches long at this point.

    3

Open the black plastic oxygen valve on top of the oxygen tank connector. Open the valve slowly until the flame loses its feather in the middle.

    4

Heat the steel rods where the weld begins, by applying heat from the burner wand until they become red-hot and form a puddle of molten metal between them.

    5

Slip a welding rod into the puddle in order to add extra material to the weld. Work slowly down the entire area of the weld, working the torch back and forth between the rods while melting the steel rods and the welding rod into one, as the weld progresses.

    6

ORemove the burner wand from the material when the weld is complete. Turn off the oxygen valve. Turn off the gas valve. Allow the weld to cool.

What Is a Toyota Camry Coil Pack

What Is a Toyota Camry Coil Pack?

The name "Camry" is an anglicized interpretation of the cars original nomenclature "Kanmuri," which means "crown" in Japanese. Little could Toyota have known when it introduced the car in 1982 how appropriate that name would become, as the Camry would eventually be crowned the king of compact sedans in America.

Ignition Function

The basic purpose of any automobiles ignition system is to ignite the air/fuel in the cylinders. Three basic parts comprise the ignition system: the triggering mechanism that sends energy to the spark plugs, the ignition coil that amplifies the triggering energy to create a powerful spark and the spark plug that receives that energy to make the air/fuel mixture detonate. The shorter the distance between the ignition coil and plug, the less energy the system loses through resistance in the wire.

Coil Pack Ignition

Ideally, a spark plug should be connected directly to the ignition coil so that every bit of the coils energy goes into creating a spark. This wasnt practical on older, distributor-driven cars; the distributor itself was the weak link in the system, so the gains would have been minimal. It wasnt until the mid-1980s that computers and magnetic sensors were cheap enough, powerful enough and sophisticated enough to detect crankshaft position and trigger the coil without a distributor. Once these were mass-produced, manufacturers began using a computer to trigger multiple coils in a "coil pack." Each coil provided energy to two cylinders.

Direct Ignition

Direct ignition is an evolution of coil-pack ignition and uses a single coil mounted directly to the back of the spark plug instead of one coil for every two cylinders. Direct ignition is the most theoretically perfect ignition possible with todays technology, offering a very powerful, computer-controlled spark without relying on a single moving component. The Camry doesnt actually use a coil pack; it has direct ignition with one small coil-pack-style coil per cylinder.

Failure

One of the direct ignition systems strongest trump cards is that it uses solid-state technology. There are no moving parts to wear out; even the crankshaft position sensor is fully magnetic, so it cant wear out through normal use as a mechanical component would. Aside from computer failure, the only way that a direct ignition system can fail is if the coil itself internally shorts out or something happens to the wiring between the coils and the computer.

If you suspect ignition coil failure, simply unplug the wiring harness from the top of the plug and see if the engine changes pitch or idle quality. Of course, the Camrys on-board diagnostics system will already have detected a coil malfunction and triggered a check engine light, so this might action might not be necessary.

How to Prevent the Causes of Thrust Bearing Failure

How to Prevent the Causes of Thrust Bearing Failure

The thrust bearing is part of a vehicle transmission system. When the thrust bearing fails or does not work properly, it can cause problems for the vehicle. Preventing the failure of a vehicle thrust bearing can minimize problems and ensure the vehicle runs smoothly for a longer period of time.

Instructions

    1

Check the torque converter. According to GNT Type, when the torque converter has too much pressure on it, the converter will balloon and put pressure on the bearing. Checking and maintaining the torque converter will minimize the risk of too much pressure.

    2

Get the thrust bearing alignment checked. Another potential problem with the thrust bearing that causes failure is misalignment. Having a regular check of the thrust bearing alignment will minimize the risks of alignment problems and prevent thrust bearing failure.

    3

Lubricate the thrust bearing regularly. Inadequate lubrication results in wear and tear on the thrust bearing. Persistent inadequate lubrication can cause early failure of the bearing. By adding lubrication on a regular basis, the thrust bearing is protected from wear and tear.

    4

Look over the bearing and make sure the shells are installed. When the thrust bearing is changed in a vehicle, the bearing shell is also changed. If the shell is not present, it results in problems for the bearing and ultimately failure. Always check that the shells are installed when the bearing is changed.

Small Engine Information

Small Engine Information

Small engines are found in several types of machines, including motorcycles, motorboats, chainsaws and jet skis. Like larger engines, small engines require routine maintenance and inspection. The biggest difference is the size of the small engines.

Tools

Several common tools are required to work on small engines, including screwdrivers, wrenches and pliers. Specialized tools, including computerized analyzers, compression gauges and power tools, may be necessary for complicated small engine repairs. Other types of testing devices may also need to be used to locate parts of the engine that need to be repaired or replaced.

Routine Maintenance

Small engine routine maintenance involves a checklist of engine parts to be inspected, including electrical systems, brakes, carburetors, plugs and fuel injection systems. While some routine maintenance inspections reveal minor repair work that needs to be done, others identify more extensive repairs that can take several hours to complete.

Make Up
