How to Replace a Drive Belt on a 1998 Cavalier
The engine accessories on the 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier are driven by a single accessory belt. The belt is designed to operate the power steering pump, alternator, air conditioner and the water pump by traveling around all of the accessory pulleys at the same time. The ribs on the inside of the accessory belt travel inside of the grooves of each accessory pulley. This allows the belt to turn the accessory pulleys easier. Change the belt out if there are any visible signs of wear, fraying or cracking.
Instructions
- 1
Inspect the top of the plastic shield that covers the radiator for the accessory belt routing diagram. Install the new belt by following the routing directions from this diagram.
2Locate the self-adjusting belt tensioner on the front left-hand side of the motor. The tensioner has an idler pulley attached to the end of the tensioner arm. Rotate the entire tensioner device from the metric bolt in the middle of the tensioner pulley.
3Rotate the tensioner device in a clockwise motion with a breaker bar and a socket. Pull the belt off of the top of the tensioner pulley. Release the tension from the breaker bar, and let the tensioner retract until it stops.
4Remove the single belt out from around all of the accessory pulleys. Pull the belt over each fan blade and out of the engine well.
5Slide the new belt over each fan blade and into each of the accessory pulley as directed by the belt routing diagram.
6Rotate the tensioner in a clockwise motion with the breaker bar and socket again. Pull the belt over the top of the tensioner pulley, and release the tension from the breaker bar until the tensioner stops retracting against the belt. Remove the breaker bar from the tensioner pulley.
7Crank the motor up and let it run for around 15 seconds to seat the ribs of the belt to the grooves of each pulley. Turn the motor off.

How to Remove a Cavalier Catalytic Converter
Removal of a catalytic converter is not a task for a novice. It requires the skill of a certified mechanic who is a trained and experienced welder as well as technician. Removing the catalytic converter requires dealing with highly flammable gasoline and a cutting torch that can cause severe burns and damage the eyes retina by way of welding flash. For a certified technician this is a relatively simple procedure involving dropping the gas tank, cutting the old converter out and welding in a new one. For the novice, this is an extremely dangerous procedure that should not be attempted.
Instructions
- 1
Remove the fuel filter housing located in the trunk under the carpet. Disconnect both wires going to the filter housing. Remove the filter with the housing and set aside.
2Remove as much fuel from the fuel tank as possible. If the vehicle has a drain plug, place a drip pan under the vehicle and remove the plug. Allow all the fuel to drain out of the tank. This does not make the tank completely safe, Gas fumes are the most explosive part of dealing with fuel. Draining the fuel makes the procedure safer but not completely safe.
3Remove the drip pan from under the car and discard the fuel in an OSHA approved container. Do not dump on the ground. Fines for this kind of disposal are large and are to be avoided. Replace the drain plug in the fuel tank and find the bolts holding the retaining straps on either side of the tank. Make sure you wear safety glasses throughout this procedure to prevent getting residual gas in your eyes. If you get gas in your eyes, flush with water for five minutes and seek medical help.
4Once you have located the bolts holding the retaining straps, use an open end box end wrench or ratchet and socket set to loosen the bolts. (if your vehicle needs to be raised to get under it, use a hydraulic jack and jack stands or a hydraulic car lift). Place a hydraulic jack rated the the gross weight of you vehicle in the center of the fuel tank.
5Remove the mount bolts and let the fuel tank rest on the jack. Slowly lower the tank and pull out from under the car with the hydraulic jack. Make sure the fuel tank is in an open air area of the shop so that the fumes can dissipate.
6Raise the vehicle and use a hydraulic jack and jack stands or a car lift (preferred), to raise the vehicle high enough that the welder can stand under the car. Measure the length of exhaust pipe coming out each end of the converter. Mark the exhaust line in the vehicle to match the measurement of the new converter.

How to Replace the Transmission Lines in a Chevy Cavalier
The transmission lines on your Chevy Cavalier carry transmission fluid from the cooling core in the radiator to the transmission. As the fluid heats up in the transmission, if becomes thin and less effective; cooling it becomes necessary. But if one of your Cavaliers transmission lines is leaking or damaged, youll need to replace it. Otherwise, the transmission fluid will leak or plug and the fluid level will drop, damaging the transmission. Replacement cooling lines are available, pre-bent to fit your Cavalier, from any Chevrolet dealer.
Instructions
- 1
Raise the front of your Cavalier off the ground, using a jack, and place a pair of jack stands under the frame to support the Cavalier. Position an oil drain pan under the radiator where the transmission lines meet the radiator.
2Loosen the fitting on the end of one transmission line at the radiator with a wrench, then pull the line down and let any transmission fluid drip into the drain pan. Move to the other end of the line, where it meets the transmission, and place a second drain pan under the lines.
3Loosen the fitting on the transmission end of the line youre working on, using a wrench, then pull the line out from under the car. Slide a new line in place, attaching it to the transmission first. Tighten the fitting with a wrench.
4Raise the line to the hole on the radiator and thread the fitting in place. Tighten the fitting with a wrench until it is tight. Repeat the process for the second line. Remove the drain pans from under the car.
5Raise the car off the jack stands with your jack, remove the jack stands and lower the car to the ground. Remove the jack from under the car.
