The Components of the Oldsmobile Alero Headlamp

The headlamp is a series of components that allows the driver to see during nighttime driving as well as signal other drivers of an upcoming turn or lane change. There are four components to the headlamp in an Oldsmobile Alero. Unlike the headlamps of similar vehicles during the time the Alero was produced (1999 to 2004), the Alero uses a single headlamp on each side as opposed to multiple lamps on each side.

Headlamp Housing

The headlamp housing is the main component for the system, housing the low beam, high beam and turn signal bulbs. The Oldsmobile Alero uses a single-piece assembly, one on each side, rather than a separate unit for the normal driving lights and side marker on each side. The rear of the headlamp housing has two threaded studs used for adjusting the position of the lights by adjusting a nut on the stud.

Low Beam Bulb

The low beam bulbs are located in the center of the headlamp assembly. These bulbs are used for driving during normal night conditions and are switched on using the multifunction switch to the left of the steering column. These bulbs are numbered 9006 by all companies that sell this bulb in retail locations. On the rear of the bulb is an electrical connector that serves as the connection point for wiring.

High Beam Bulb

The high beam bulbs are located in the headlamp assembly, nearer to the center of the car. These bulbs are used for driving during extreme weather conditions during nighttime and are switched on using the multifunction switch to the left of the steering column. These bulbs are numbered 9005 by all companies that sell this bulb in retail locations. On the rear of the bulb is a electrical connector.

Turn Signal Bulb

The turn signal bulbs are located in the headlamp assembly on the outer edge, covered by an amber-colored lens on the assembly. These bulbs are used to signal turns to other drivers. They are switched on by pulling down or up the multifunction switch to the left of the steering column. These bulbs are numbered 3156 and 3157 by all companies that sell this bulb in retail locations. On the rear of the bulb is a electrical connector.
