Ensure the key is not in the ignition of the 1999 Pontiac Grand Am and the headlight switch is in the "Off" position.

Open the hood.

Remove the eight push-pin clips on the splash guard that runs along the radiator rail. Use the needle-nose pliers to pull up on the center pin of the clips to unlock them and then remove the clips, making sure to keep track of the two different sizes, as you will replace them later.

Locate the two upside-down, L-shaped brackets at the rear of the headlight assembly. Lift each bracket up about an inch. Use the pliers to help pull the brackets up, if necessary.

Wiggle the headlight assembly forward, away from the Grand Am, being caul not to scratch the lens or the paint on the car. There are three guide pins that align the assembly and headlights in place. It may take some wiggling of the assembly to dislodge the guide pins.

Pull the headlight assembly forward far enough to reach in behind it with one hand, while supporting the assembly with the other.

Disconnect the wire harness plug going into the headlight bulb socket.

Turn the headlight bulb bezel counterclockwise about one-third of a turn to align the retaining tabs to the notches and then remove the bezel and headlight bulb from the back of the assembly.

Put on the latex gloves before getting the replacement bulb, to avoid accidentally touching the glass bulb.

Place the bulb into the bezel and then insert the bulb and bezel into the headlight assembly, properly aligning the retaining tabs to the correct notches. Once the bulb and bezel are in place, turn the bezel clockwise one-third turn to lock it into place.

Plug the wire harness back into the headlight bulb socket and then align the guide pins of the headlight assembly to their respective seats. Push inward on the assembly to seat the guide pins.

Test the headlight bulb by turning the ignition key and then the headlight switch before pushing the retaining brackets back into place. Remove the tools and close the hood when finished.

Turn the headlight switch to the on position. When the headlight doors open, turn the headlight switch back one turn to the parking light position. Leave the switch in this position for the remainder of the procedure.

Remove the three trim panel screws (one on top and two on each side) that surround the dual headlights using the Phillips head screwdriver. Remove the trim panel and set it aside face up to avoid scratching it.

Remove the four screws (two on top and two on bottom) on the faulty headlight retaining bracket. Inspect the screws before attempting to remove them. The screws are located near each upper and lower corner of the bracket. Do not turn the screws at the top center above the headlight or on the center side of the headlight. These are headlight adjusting screws.

Pull the headlight out far enough to grasp the three-pronged plug connected to the back of the sealed beam headlight. Unplug the connection from the headlight.

Install the replacement headlight by plugging it into the three-pronged wire harness (making sure the words and numbers stamped on the outer headlight lens are in the upright position) and then place the headlight into its hole.

Replace the retaining bracket and screws to hold the headlight into place.

Test the headlight by turning the headlight switch back to the on position. Turn the headlight switch back to the parking light position.

Replace the trim panel and retaining screws.

Plug the OBD II code scanner into the OBD II port just to the left of the steering column on the dashboard.

Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the "On" position. Make sure you dont start the engine.

Select the "Read Codes" or similar command on the code scanner. Then select "Delete Codes." Wait for the code scanner to return to the main menu.

Unplug the code scanner from the port and start the engine. Make sure that the "Check Engine" light has shut off.

Lift the hood to the Grand Am and look fro the power steering fluid tank next to the engine. Look for the fill line on the tank and make sure that you have enough fluid in the tank. Fill the tank with power steering fluid if needed.

Look over the coolant levels to make sure you have enough coolant if your Grand AM is overheating. The coolant system is right by the power steering fluid tank. Add 50/50 coolant to the tank until the coolant level is at the fill line.

Check over the battery on the right side of the engine. The battery should have tight connections from the cable to the battery terminals. If the connections are loose, tighten them with a pair of channel locks or pliers.

Test the battery with a voltmeter if your car wont start. Place the testing leads on the battery terminals according to the color of the leads. If you get anything less than 11 volts from the test, you should charge your battery.

Turn the key in your ignition and look over the fuel levels. If you dont have enough fuel in the gas tank, you car will not be able to start. Fill the gas tank as needed to get the car starter.
