How to Reset the Computer on a 1992 GMC Jimmy

Starting in the late 1970s, vehicles were equipped with on-board computers that were specific to each vehicle. This often meant a trip to the dealership service center for diagnosis and computer resets. The 1992 GMC Jimmy was no exception. A GM-specific computer scan tool must be used to read and clear codes as well as reset the computer. In 1996, the second phase of on-board diagnostics standardized the equipment needed to perform this task so most all repair stations could do this for every type of later model vehicle.

Instructions

    1

    Open the hood of your 1992 GMC Jimmy.

    2

    Remove the black, negative battery terminal bolt from the batterys side post with an 8 mm box-end wrench turned counterclockwise.

    3

    Detach the red, positive battery terminal bolt from the batterys side post with the wrench.

    4

    Turn on the headlight switch inside the passenger cab to discharge any stored voltage in the capacitor. Wait five to 10 minutes.

    5

    Reconnect the red, positive battery terminal bolt to the batterys side post first and tighten it with the wrench.

    6

    Reattach the black, negative battery terminal bolt to the batterys side post and tighten it with the wrench.

GMC Truck Steering Problems

General Motors Company and the National Highway Traffic System Administration have announced multiple safety recalls due to steering problems in GMC trucks. Sierra pickups with model years of 2003-2006 may experience difficulty steering due to a range of manufacturing defects. If not repaired, any of these steering problems could lead to a crash.

Power Steering Hose Defect

    On October 4, 2005, General Motors recalled 123,592 vehicles including certain 2005-2006 model year Sierra pickup trucks for problems with the power steering hose. A manufacturing defect may cause the hose to break and leak fluid if the steering wheel is turned extremely to the left or right while braking.

Steering Connector Bolt Defect

    On January 20, 2005, General Motors recalled certain 2005 model year GMC Sierra trucks to replace the bolt connecting the steering gear to the steering shaft. If not repaired, the defective bolt may break and cause a loss of steering.

Hydraulic Brake System Defects

    In January 2004 and February 2005, General Motors recalled certain 2003-2005 Sierra pickups for manufacturing issues that could result in steering problems. A defect in the hydro-boost relief valve in 2003-2004 GMC Sierra trucks may cause the driver to have to use excessive force to steer and/or brake. A potentially problematic hydro-boost assembly in 2004-2005 GMC Sierra trucks may cause an hydraulic fuel leak, which may lead the driver to experience steering and brake problems.

How to Repair a Heater Blower Motor in a 1997 GMC Jimmy

Unlike many other vehicles, the blower motor in a 1997 GMC Jimmy is sealed inside the blower motor compartment from the factory. A perforated access panel must be cut and removed in order to replace a faulty motor. The most common sign of a faulty blower is squealing or screeching when the blower fan is set to a medium or high speed setting. This is due to the motor bearings failing after many hours of use. Another common problem with the blower motor is failure of the motor armature assembly. In this situation, the only symptom would be a non-responsive motor despite the desired speed setting.

Instructions

Removal

    1

    Pop open the hood and support it with the hood prop. Disconnect the negative battery terminal with an 8 mm battery wrench.

    2

    Remove the bolts holding the VCM to its mounting bracket with a ratchet and metric socket. Leave the VCM connectors attached and swing it to the side and out of the way.

    Squeeze the spring clamp holding the feed hose to the coolant reservoir with a pair of pliers and slide it away from the end of the hose. Remove the coolant feed hose from the reservoir. Remove the bolts holding the reservoir to the vehicle with a metric socket and ratchet. Remove the reservoir from the vehicle while turning it to its side to prevent coolant from spilling out. Pour the coolant into a drain pan and set the reservoir aside.

    Disconnect any electrical connectors blocking the blower motor compartment. Remove the screws at the bottom of the from blower motor cover with a ratchet and metric socket. Disconnect the blower motors electrical harness.

    5

    Cut along the perforated cut lines with a utility knife to separate the upper portion of the cover from the blower motor compartment. Grip the upper half of the cover and tear the remaining section of the access cover away from the blower motor compartment along the tear lines. Cut along the perforated lines on the bottom portion of the cover with a utility knife and then tear the remaining section away from the blower motor compartment until the lower access panel is free.

    Remove the screws holding the blower motor in place and remove the blower motor from the blower motor compartment.

Installation

    7

    Set the new blower motor into position inside the access panel and reinstall the blower motor retaining screws with a ratchet and metric socket.

    Join the tabs of the upper and lower blower motor access panels together to form one panel. Cut a piece of black duct tape to the width of the lower access panel and affix it to the bottom leading edge of the lower access panel.

    9

    Set the access panel into place and reinstall the panel retaining screws. Align the cut areas of the access panel with the blower motor compartment and seal the cut line areas with black, self-adhesive weather stripping. Let the adhesive set for 15 minutes before proceeding.

    10

    Reconnect the blower motor electrical harness and the electrical connectors in front of the blower motor compartment.

    11

    Set the coolant reservoir into position and reinstall its retaining bolt. Reconnect the coolant feed hose and reposition the hose clamp.

    12

    Set the VCM into position and reinstall its retaining bolts. Reconnect the negative battery terminal and full re-fill the coolant reservoir with a 50/50 mixture of distilled water and DEXCOOL coolant until the level reaches the FULL COLD mark.

    13

    Turn the ignition on and test the blower motor on each fan setting.

How to Repair a GMC Power Mirror

A broken side mirror on a car or truck is among the most common of auto body problems. The plastic or mirror on the power mirror can get smashed or cracked and need repair. Replacing the broken power mirror with a new mirror will improve your visibility as you drive. A replacement power mirror is easy to install. The process shouldnt take more than two hours. Purchase a replacement GMC side mirror at an auto parts store or from a General Motors dealer.

Instructions

    1

    Open the GMC car or truck door. Locate the screws that hold the GMC door panel in place. Unscrew the screws with a screwdriver and remove the door panel. Pop the mirror trim out of place with a flathead screwdriver.

    Unscrew the screws that hold the side mirror in the door. Set the screws aside. Unhook the cable in the mirror from the cable in the door. The cables should easily slide apart at the plastic electric harness that holds the two cables together. Slide the mirror from the door.

    Slide the wire cable of the new side mirror through the hole in the car door. Use a screwdriver and the old screws you set aside to secure the mirror to the door. Connect the cable of the new mirror into the cable in the door at the plastic electric harness. Screw the door panel back into place. Pop the window trim into the door.

What Is C3 on a GMC

What Is C3 on a GMC?

C3, also abbreviated CCC, stands for Computer Command Control. For GMC and all General Motors vehicles predating 1996, the C3 system encompasses a vehicles Electronic Control Module and the engine-related diagnostic system.

First Generation On-Board Diagnostics

    In 1996, the Environmental Protection Agency made vehicle diagnostics standard for all makes and models. Before this policy became law, automotive manufacturers used their own unique diagnostic systems. For all General Motors vehicles, the process of access trouble codes differs among Fords, Chryslers and other vehicles. Collectively, this is now known as OBD-I. Everything after 1996 operates under OBD-II standards.

C3 Flash Codes

    Once a GMC vehicles ECM detects a problem, a diagnostic trouble code is created. Accessing these codes requires putting the GMC into a self-testing procedure. This can be done by connection the "A" and "B" slots on the GMCs data outlet, which is located directly beneath the steering wheel. Once the ignition key is turned to "On," the codes will be relayed through a flashing check engine light.

Deciphering Flash Codes

    General Motors flash codes are numbers comprised of two characters. The first number is represented by a long flash, and the second number is conveyed with shorter flashes. For example, GM code 26 will be two flashes followed by six brief flashes. Code 12 is flashed at the beginning of a self-testing procedure. It does not correspond with a diagnostic problem.

Looking up GM Flash Codes

    The system will flash only the codes themselves. When using the self-test procedure, an owner will need to locate definitions for General Motors flash codes. These definitions can be found easily online (See Resources). However, a GMC-focused Haynes or Chilton repair manual also will contain the needed definitions. A GMC owners manual will not feature these definitions.

How to Adjust the Parking Brake on a GMC Safari

You can make an adjustment to the parking brake on your GMC Safari right from your home garage, saving yourself time and money. The way you can tell that its time to adjust your Safaris parking brake is when you park downhill and set the parking brake but it starts to slip. The best part is that the job doesnt take long and you dont even need any tools.

Instructions

    1

    Locate the parking brake pedal on the left side of the drivers foot well. Press down on the pedal all the way to the floor as far as it will go.

    2

    Disengage the parking brake pedal by pressing down on it again with your foot.

    3

    Repeat Steps 1 and 2 at least three more times to adjust your Safaris parking brake. This automatic adjustment takes up the slack in the parking brake cable.

    4

    Park your vehicle facing downhill. Engage the parking brake. You will know you have correctly adjusted the parking brake if your Safari holds in place and doesnt slip.

How to Replace the Oxygen Sensor on a GMC Yukon

If your GMC Yukon is running rough or burning through more gas than usual--and especially if these symptoms are combined with an illuminated "check engine" light--you may have a failing oxygen sensor. The oxygen sensor is located just below the manifold, behind the wheel well on the driver side of the Yukon. You can access it easily from beneath the truck. Purchase a new oxygen sensor at an auto parts store or GMC dealership.

Instructions

    1

    Raise the front end of your GMC Yukon using a jack. Place a set of jack stands beneath the front of the truck to secure it. Remove the jack.

    2

    Remove the retaining clip from the wiring harness connected to the oxygen sensor by pulling it up to release it. Remove the wiring harness from the sensor. The GMC Yukon uses a wiring harness that pulls free by hand, so carefully pull it upward away from the sensor.

    3

    Remove the oxygen sensor using an oxygen sensor socket and ratchet. Check the thread area on the truck and wipe it with a clean rag if needed to clear any debris.

    4

    Insert the new oxygen sensor using the oxygen sensor socket and ratchet. It may be easier to thread it in by hand so that you dont cross-thread the sensor. Torque the sensor to 31 foot-pounds with a torque wrench.

    5

    Raise the truck with the jack. Remove the jack stands. Lower the truck to the ground.
