How to Replace the Injectors on an E38
BMW based its 7 series of cars, made from 1994 to 2001, on its E38 platform. The 740I --- the most popular vehicle in the series --- featured an eight-cylinder, 4.4-liter engine. All of the engines in this series use fuel injection, which requires a fuel injector to deliver fuel to the engines at high pressure. The fuel injectors for the E38 incidents are part of the fuel rail assembly on top of the engine.

Remove the upper intake manifold with a socket wrench and detach the electrical connectors for the fuel injectors. Disconnect the vacuum hose on the front of the fuel rail.
2Attach a pair of locking pliers to the adjustment screws on the hose clamps for the fuel return line on the fuel rail. Turn the screws counterclockwise to loosen the clamps and disconnect the fuel return line from the fuel rail. Remove the flare nut on the fuel line with a 12-millimeter socket and disconnect the fuel line from the fuel rail.
3Spray compressed air around the base of the fuel injectors to keep debris out of the injector ports. Remove the mounting bolts for the fuel rail with a 10-millimeter socket.
4Pad the corner of the valve cover with a clean shop towel and pry the fuel rail with a small pry tool to lift the injectors out of the manifold. Push the fuel lines to the side and remove the fuel rail assembly from the engine.
5Pull the fuel injectors from the fuel rail assembly and connect the new fuel injectors. Install the fuel rail assembly to the engine and fasten the mounting bolts for the fuel rail.
6Connect the fuel line to the fuel rail with the flare nut. Connect the fuel return line to the fuel rail by attaching the hose clamps and fasten the retaining screws on the clamps.
7Connect the vacuum hose to the front of the fuel rail and attach the electrical connectors to the fuel injectors. Replace the upper intake manifold with a socket wrench.

Installing Fuel Injectors in a 1992 Pontiac Bonneville
The Pontiac Bonneville is a series of cars manufactured by the Pontiac division of General Motors since 1957. The 1992 model is the first of the eighth generation of the Pontiac Bonneville, and represents a major redesign over the previous generation. The standard engine in the 1992 Pontiac Bonneville was a six cylinder, 3.8 L engine with sequential fuel injection. You must remove the fuel rail to access the fuel injectors for this vehicle.

Disconnect the cable for the negative battery terminal with a socket wrench to avoid the accidental discharge of fuel. Open the filler cap on the fuel tank to relieve the pressure in the fuel tank.
2Remove the cap for the fuel pressure connection on the fuel rail and wrap a shop towel around the connection. Attach fuel pressure valve J 34730-1A to the fuel pressure connection. Place the open end of the pressure valves bleed hose into a container approved for gasoline open the valve to relieve the pressure in the fuel system. Disconnect the pressure valve and replace the cap for the fuel pressure connection.
3Disconnect the fuel lines for the fuel rail with a back-up wrench and discard the O-rings. Detach the fuel return line from the pressure regulator. Disconnect the wiring for the ignition coil and electrical connectors for the fuel injector. Remove the mounting bolts for the fuel rail with a socket wrench and disconnect the fuel rail assembly by pulling on both sides of the fuel rail with equal force.
4Cover the open fuel lines with masking tape to keep debris out of the fuel lines. Release the retaining clips for the fuel injector and discard them. Detach the fuel injector from the fuel rail. Discard all of the O-rings on the fuel injectors.
5Apply a thin layer of engine oil to the new O-rings. Install the O-rings onto the new fuel injectors and place the new retainer clip onto the fuel injector. Place the fuel injectors into the sockets on the fuel rail so the electrical connections on the fuel injectors face outwards. Lock the retainer clips for the fuel injectors.
6Install the fuel rail by performing steps 3 and 4 in reverse order. Fasten the cap for the fuel tank and connect the cable on the negative battery terminal with a socket wrench. Turn the ignition on for two seconds to pressurize the fuel system, then turn the ignition off for 10 seconds. Turn the ignition back on and check for fuel leaks.

How to Change Injectors on a 6 0 Ford Engine
Ford began producing an eight-cylinder 6.0-liter diesel engine in 2003 that appeared in heavy Ford trucks until 2008. This is a diesel engine with fuel injection that is typically turbocharged. It is most common in Ford Super Duty trucks, and is the standard engine in the 2007 Ford F350 Super Duty with four-wheel drive. The fuel injectors for this engine are part of the fuel rail assembly, which you must remove to replace the fuel injectors.

Remove the mounting bolts for the valve cover with a socket wrench and disconnect the valve cover. Unplug the wiring harnesses from the fuel injectors, and disconnect the crankcase-to-head tube assembly from the engine.
2Remove the mounting bolts for the oil rail with a socket wrench and disconnect the oil rail. Push the electrical connector for the fuel injector out of the rocker arm carrier with a small pry tool. Plug the oil drain holes next to the glow plugs with clean shop rags.
3Disconnect the mounting bolt for the fuel injector with a socket wrench and release the hold-down clamp on the fuel injector. Remove the fuel injectors from the fuel rail with a Snap-On SDMT440 Torx tool so that you dont damage the fuel injectors plastic housing. Remove the shop rags from the oil drain holes. Discard the O-rings and copper washers on the fuel injectors.
4Mount the new O-rings and copper washers on the fuel injectors. Lubricate the fuel injectors with engine oil and install the fuel injectors to the fuel rail. Attach the hold-down clamps for the fuel injectors and tighten the mounting bolt 24 ft. lbs. with a torque wrench. Connect the electrical connector to the rocker arm carrier and coat the upper O-rings on the fuel injectors with engine oil.
5Place the oil rail on the fuel injectors so that the single ball tubes on the oil rail engage the lead angle of the fuel injectors. Insert a guide bolt into each end of the oil rail and a guide bolt in the middle of the oil rail to temporarily hold it in place. Push the oil rail into the fuel injectors so the mounting feet of the oil rail are flush with their mounting surface on the engine block. Install mounting bolts for the oil rail into the six available holes and replace the three guide bolts with mounting bolts. Tighten the nine mounting bolts to 10 ft. lbs with a torque wrench.
6Connect the crankcase-to-head tube assembly and tighten the mounting bolts to 60 ft. lbs. with a torque wrench. Attach the electrical connectors to the fuel injectors and install the valve covers.

How to Replace 6 5L Injectors
The 6.5-liter engine introduced by General Motors in 1992 was a diesel engine that was frequently turbocharged. It was an option for many full-size Chevrolet and GMC pickup trucks from 1992 to 1999. The fuel injectors in the 6.5-liter deliver diesel fuel to the engine at precise intervals to maximize fuel efficiency. The replacement of the fuel injectors in this engine requires you to remove additional components to access the injectors.

Remove the cable from the negative terminal of the battery with a socket wrench to ensure you dont accidentally start the engine. Release the clip that connects the fuel return line to the fuel injectors and detach the fuel line.
2Remove the mounting bolt that attaches the the air cleaner bracket to the valve cover with a socket wrench, and detach the air cleaner bracket from the valve cover. Disconnect the bracket for the crankcase ventilator. Detach the fuel lines to the secondary fuel filter and disconnect the secondary fuel filter.
3Release the clamp that holds the vacuum pump in place and move the pump to gain access to the mounting bolts for the intake manifold. Disconnect the mounting bolts with a socket wrench and remove the intake manifold. Place a cover such as GM part no. J-29664-1 to keep debris out of the engine.
4Release the clips that attach the fuel injection lines to the loom brackets. Detach the fuel injection lines from the fuel injector nozzles and place caps on the fuel injector nozzles. Disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel injection pump.
5Grip the 30mm hex portion of each fuel injector with GM special tool J-29873 and turn the injector counterclockwise to remove it. Remove and discard the fuel injector gaskets. Place a protective cap on the open end of each fuel injector to keep debris out of the fuel injector.
6Mount a new gasket to each new fuel injector. Attach GM special tool J-29873 to a torque wrench and install the fuel injector by turning it clockwise with the special tool. Torque the fuel injector to 50 ft. lbs.
7Perform steps one through four in reverse sequence to complete the installation of the fuel injectors. Tighten the fittings for the fuel injection lines to 20 ft. lbs. with a torque wrench. Tighten the mounting bolts for the secondary fuel filter to 30 ft. lbs. Tighten the bolts that connect the fuel line to the secondary fuel filter to 9 in. lbs.

How to Replace International 7 3 Fuel Injectors
International Harvester made an eight-cylinder 7.3-liter diesel engine from 1988 to 1992. The engine was typically used in large Ford trucks from this period, such as the F250 3/4 ton pickup truck. The International 7.3-liter engine uses direct fuel injection.. The injectors for this engine do not require electronic control and are easily accessible, making it easy to replace them.

Clean the fuel injector nozzles and fittings with fuel oil to prevent fuel contamination when you replace the injectors. Blow the area dry with an air compressor.
2Release the retaining clamps on the fuel line to the fuel injector. Fetach the fuel lines from the fuel injectors with a flare nut wrench. Disconnect the run-off tees from the fuel injectors and discard their gaskets. Move the fuel lines out of your way, and cover the ends of the fuel injectors with plastic caps to keep dirt out of the injectors.
3Turn the fuel injector counterclockwise with a socket wrench. Pull the injector from its bore, and discard the copper gasket. Clean the injector bore with special tool T83T-9527-A, and blow out the loose debris with an air compressor.
4Dab a small amount of anti-seize compound on the nozzle of the new fuel injector, and mount a copper gasket to the injector. Install the fuel injector into its bore, and tighten it to 33 foot-pounds with a torque wrench.
5Mount new gaskets to the run-off tees, and connect the run-off tees to the fuel injector. Connect the fuel lines to the fuel injector with a flare nut wrench, and attach the retainer clamps to the fuel injector. Start the engine and check for fuel leaks.

How to Replace Injectors in a 1988 Ford Diesel
Diesel engines are most common on larger pickup trucks, such as the Ford F-250. This truck has a rated carrying capacity of 3/4 ton, although it can actually carry much more weight. The only diesel engine available on a 1988 F-series truck was an eight-cylinder 7.3-liter engine. Each fuel injector delivers fuel to a cylinder in a specific sequence and amount. Its theore essential that you install each fuel injector into the correct cylinder.

Release the clamps on the fuel lines to the fuel injectors and disconnect the fuel lines with a flare nut wrench. Discard the gaskets for the fuel lines and push the fuel lines to the side so you can access the fuel injectors.
2Cover the top end of the fuel injectors with plastic caps to keep them clean. Turn the fuel injectors counterclockwise and pull them from the engine. Record the cylinder of each fuel injector as you remove it. Cover the nozzle end of the fuel injectors with plastic caps.
3Remove the copper gasket from the nozzle of each fuel injector with tool T71P-19703-C and discard the gasket. Clean the bore of the fuel injectors with tool T83T-9527-A and blow compressed air into the bore to remove any carbon or metal particles.
4Remove the cap from the nozzle of each fuel injector. Apply a small amount of grease to the nozzle and install a new copper gasket to the fuel injector.
5Apply an anti-seize compound to the fuel injector threads to prevent the injectors from sticking. Install the fuel injector to its correct cylinder head and tighten it to 33 ft. lbs. with a torque wrench. Remove the protective caps from the open end of the fuel injectors.
6Install new O-rings on the fuel return line and connect the fuel lines to the fuel injectors with a flare nut wrench. Attach the clamps for the fuel lines. Start the engine and check for fuel leaks.

How to Change Six Liter Power Stroke Injectors
The Power Stroke is a turbocharged diesel engine that Ford began making in 1994. The 6.0-liter version of this engine entered production in 2003, and it was the primary engine in Ford Super Duty trucks until 2008. The engine uses fuel injection to deliver specific amounts of fuel to each cylinder in a precise sequence. The fuel injectors in a 6.0-liter Power Stroke engine are part of the oil rail assembly, which you must remove to access the injectors.

Disconnect the valve cover with a socket wrench. Unplug the electrical connector from the fuel injector.
2Remove the crankcase-to-head tube assembly with a socket wrench. Disconnect the bolts that attach the oil rail to the engine and remove the oil rail. Extract the fuel injector electrical connector from the rocker arm carrier with a suitable pry tool.
3Insert shop rags into the oil drain holes in the crankcase. Remove the bolt for the fuel injector with a socket wrench and disconnect the hold-down clamp from the fuel injector. Remove the fuel injectors from the oil rail assembly with a Snap-On SDMT440 Torx or similar tool. This is necessary to avoid damaging the plastic portion of the fuel injector. Pull the shop rags from the oil drain holes.
4Mount new copper washers and O-rings to the new fuel injectors and coat the fuel injectors liberally with engine oil. Install the fuel injectors on the oil fuel rail and connect the hold-down clamps. Tighten the mounting bolt for the fuel injector to 24 foot-pounds, using a torque wrench.
5Install the electrical connector for the fuel injector to the rocker arm carrier with a pry tool. Apply engine oil to the fuel injector to lubricate its top O-rings.
6Mount the oil rail on top of its carrier. Insert a guide bolt on each end of the straight side of the oil rail, then insert a third guide bolt in the middle of the oil rails wavy side. Press the oil rail into position so that its mounting feet are flush against the oil rails mounting surface.
7Install mounting bolts in the six remaining holes of the oil rail and replace the three guide bolts with mounting bolts. Tighten all of the mounting bolts to 10 foot-pounds, using a torque wrench.
8Install the crankcase-to-head tube assembly. Tighten the bolts for the crankcase-to-head assembly to 60 foot-pounds, using a torque wrench. Plug the electrical connectors into the fuel injectors. Replace the valve cover with a socket wrench.

Repairing Installing Pontiac Sunfire Fuel Injectors
The Pontiac Sunfire is a compact car, manufactured by Pontiac from 1995 to 2005. This vehicle uses Pontiacs J platform, and has a four-cylinder 2.2-liter engine with sequential fuel injection. Each cylinder has its own fuel injector, which delivers pressurized fuel to the cylinder in a precise sequence. The fuel injectors are generally not serviceable, so the repair procedure consists of replacing the faulty injectors.

Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal with a socket wrench to avoid the discharge of fuel while installing the fuel injectors. Open the filler cap on the fuel tank to relieve the pressure in the fuel tank.
2Wrap a shop towel around the fuel pressure port on the fuel rail to soak up fuel leaks. Connect a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel pressure port and place the free end of the pressure gauges bleed hose into a gasoline container. Open the valve on the pressure gauge to relieve the pressure in the fuel system. Disconnect the fuel pressure gauge from the fuel pressure port.
3Disconnect the outlet resonator of the air cleaner with a socket wrench. Detach the fuel lines from the fuel rail and unplug the electrical connectors for the fuel injectors. Disconnect the mounting bolts for the fuel rail and remove the fuel rail from the cylinder heads.
4Release the retainer clip on the fuel injectors and remove the fuel injectors from the fuel rail. Remove the O-rings from the fuel injector and discard them.
5Mount the new O-rings to the fuel injectors and attach the fuel injector clips. Install the fuel injectors into their corresponding sockets on the fuel rail so the electrical connectors face upward.
6Align the fuel injectors with their respective cylinder head ports and install the fuel rail to the cylinder heads. Tighten the retainers for the fuel rail to 89 inch-pounds with a torque wrench.
7Attach the electrical connectors to the fuel injectors. Connect the fuel lines to the fuel rail and connect the vacuum hose to the fuel pressure regulator. Install the outlet resonator for the air cleaner with a socket wrench.
8Connect the cable to the negative battery terminal. Turn the ignition on for two seconds to pressurize the fuel system. Turn the ignition off and check for fuel leaks.

How to Replace Fuel Injectors in 1ZZ FE
The 1ZZ-FE is a four-cylinder 1.8-liter engine that is most common on Toyota vehicles made from 1999 to 2005. This engine uses sequential fuel injection, which requires the fuel injectors to deliver fuel to the engine under high pressure. The fuel injectors for a 1ZZ-FE engine are on top of the engine, and are accessible from the engine compartment. The replacement of the fuel injectors in this engine requires the removal of additional engine components.

Remove the fuel pump fuse from the fuse box under the dashboard. Start the engine and allow the engine to stall. Crank the engine to ensure the fuel lines are empty and replace the fuel pump fuse. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal to prevent the battery from generating sparks during the fuel injector replacement.
2Disconnect the cover for the No. 2 cylinder head with a socket wrench. Detach the vacuum hose and fuel tube from the fuel pipe. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the fuel injectors.
3Disconnect the fuel pipe from the fuel injectors and detach the fuel injectors from the engine. Remove the spacers from the cylinder head and pull the fuel injectors away from the fuel pipe. Discard the O-ring and grommet for the fuel injectors.
4Coat the new O-rings and grommets with light machine oil before installing them onto the new fuel injectors. Coat the mounting surfaces on the fuel pipe with light machine oil. Install the new fuel injectors into the fuel pipe by twisting them into place so that the electrical connectors face away from the fuel pipe. Coat the injector bores in the cylinder head with light machine oil.
5Install the spacers and connect the fuel pipe to the cylinder heads. Tighten the mounting bolts for the fuel pipe to 14 foot-pounds with a torque wrench. Attach the fuel line and the PCV hose to the fuel pipe. Connect the cover for the No. 2 cylinder head and tighten its mounting bolts to 7 foot-pounds. Connect the cable for the negative battery terminal with a socket wrench.
