Tools for Opening Locked Car Doors

Automatic locks on your car door or inside your home can lead to many unfortunate locking accidents. Accidentally shut the car door with your keys inside, or close an automatic locking front door, and you are trapped on the other side, unable to get back in. Lock picking tools let you open a lock yourself, eliminating the need for a locksmith.
Slim Jims
Many locksmiths use Slim Jim kits to open locked car doors, and the general public can buy them for home use. A Slim Jim is a long, flat piece of metal with a small hook on the end. To use the Slim Jim you simply press the device through the top of the window on the car door and slide the device down to the lock. Use the hook to pull the lock upwards, unlocking the door. There are several variations on the Slim Jim such as longer devices, double ended devices and the Euro-Strip, which works on European cars such as the BMW and Mercedes.
Bump Keys
Bump keys are also called "999s," the maximum depth for a key. The user inserts the bump key into the keyhole and applies pressure with a hammer until the bump key raises the pins inside the lock, unlocking the door. According to lockpickshop.com, bump keys work on pin tumbler-type locks and dimple locks. For dimple-style locks, you can purchase a dimple gun. Dimple guns come with several sizes of bump keys and make the lock picking process easier. For pin tumbler locks, you can also purchase a special hammer made specifically for bump keys.
The BigEasy and the BigEasy Loop
The BigEasy lock picking tool works similar to a Slim Jim. The BigEasy is a thin piece of plastic that you can slide from the top of the window to reach the lock inside a car and pull the lock upwards. Automatic Transmission Rebuilding Tools

An automatic transmission is a complex piece of machinery with many small disks (clutches and steels) contained in larger cylinders forming clutch packs. The transmission uses both hydraulic fluid and electronics to control these clutch packs. When an automatic transmission goes bad, it doesnt need to be replaced---instead, it can be rebuilt. This rebuilding process requires some common tools and a few more-specific tools that the average mechanic may not have.
Ratchet Set
The ratchet is a common tool that nearly every mechanic has. This device, used in conjunction with a socket to remove nuts and bolts, is a long metal rod with a ratcheting head to hold the socket. The ratcheting head functions so that the mechanic can reset the wrench without having to remove the tool from the nut or bolt.
Socket Set
The socket is placed on the end of the ratchet and fits a nut or bolt. Sockets are small, cylindrical metal pieces that are hollow inside to allow a nut or bolt to be inserted. They come in many different sizes to fit the variety of bolt and nut sizes available.
Torque Wrench
A torque wrench is similar to a ratchet but is used only to tighten bolts. The other main difference is that it has an adjustable dial to select the proper torque amount for the particular bolt youre tightening; the wrench will emit an audible sound, typically a click, when it reaches the set torque value. This feature assures that bolts are not over- or under-torque, which is especially important when rebuilding a transmission.
Snap-Ring Pliers
Snap-ring pliers are a set of pliers that are used for opening instead of closing. The pliers have small pins on the ends that are inserted into the holes on a snap ring; the device is then opened to free the snap ring from the groove it sits in. This procedure is required when youre rebuilding a transmission, as the clutch packs are held together by these snap rings.
O-Ring Hook
The O-ring hook is a metal hook designed to pull an O-ring from the groove it sits in. An O-ring is a small rubber gasket thats in an "O" shape to create a seal. This is a must in all transmission rebuilds, as there are as many as 10 O-rings to be replaced in a rebuild.
Washer
A washer is between 3 to 5 feet tall and about 3 feet wide, depending on the model. It has a metal door on the front to place parts in for cleaning. Cleaning the transmission case and all of the reused hard parts is a requirement, as transmission failure may lead to metal shavings being spread throughout the internals of a transmission; failure to clean out these shavings can lead to transmission failure after the rebuild is completed. This washing ensures that all of the debris is cleaned out; it also makes all of the parts look new again.
Rebuilding Bench
The bench used is nearly as important as the tools used to disassemble the transmission. This type of bench has a slight slope so that all of the transmission fluid runs away from the mechanic and into a trough for proper disposal. This bench has different slots for all of the common tools used during a rebuild, including hooks so that the mechanic can hang small parts for reuse, as well as straps to hold the transmission in place during the rebuild.
Transmission Jack
The transmission jack is used to lower the transmission during removal and to lift it to reinstall it. This jack is about 3 feet tall and has a plate on top for the transmission to sit on and a series of ratcheting straps to secure the transmission.

The box wrenchs gripping head is shaped roughly like a C; the mechanic pushes the C-shaped opening around a nut or bolt to grip the fasteners adjacent sides. The ring wrenchs gripping head is a closed circle; the mechanic slips the circle over a nut or bolt to engulf its sides. Typically, a gripping head rests at each end of a wrenchs handle. Frequently, a box wrench sits at one side of the handle with a similar-size open wrench at the other, two tools in one in effect. The starting mechanic requires a combination of both box and ring wrenches in standard and metric dimensions.
Screwdrivers
Like sockets and wrenches, screwdrivers loosen and tighten fasteners. However, screwdrivers loosen fasteners that have insertion bit heads, such as slotted openings or a Phillips-style head. Screwdrivers typically consist of three parts: a handle, straight shaft and gripping tip. Screwdriver handles are typically molded plastic, shafts and tips are metal. The length of the shaft occasionally determines the capability of the screwdriver; long shafts reach deep within a machine, short-shaft ones allow the mechanic to use the tool in tight spaces. Tools For Rebuilding a Driveshaft

The driveshaft transfers power from the transmission to the differential in the back of rear- and four-wheel-drive vehicles. Rotation of the driveshaft allows for changes in suspension height. Located at the end of each driveshaft are flexible couplings, commonly erred to as U-joints. When rebuilding the drive shaft, you will generally need six tools: a U-joint pressing tool, socket set, vise, snap-ring pliers, brass punch and dial indicator.
U-Joint Pressing Tool
A pressing tool allows for easy removal of the U-joints, ensuring that other parts of the drive shaft do not become damaged. You can also find complete pressing kits. Generally, they include receiver tubes that catch the U-joint upon removal. When removing the U-joints, check for signs of damage or corrosion. Replace damaged U-joints to restore proper performance of your driveshaft. Failing to replace worn and damaged parts can cause the drive shaft to separate from the vehicle. Driveshaft separation from the car may cause an inability to control the vehicle, potentially resulting in an accident or damage to the vehicle.
Socket Set
Use a socket set to remove bolts on the driveshaft. Having a full range of sockets available will ensure that you have the right size socket for the job.
Vise

A runout amount higher than the manufacturers recommendations will indicate that the driveshaft requires replacement. Check the driveshaft periodically to ensure safety while operating the vehicle. Early warning signs that the driveshaft may require replacement include a noticeable vibration in the steering wheel during driving and grinding or knocking sounds while turning.

Tools to Remove a Front Axle on a Suzuki SV650S

The Suzuki SV650S is an extremely popular motorcycle and many do-it-yourself owners are interested in servicing their own bikes. As such, it sometimes is necessary to remove the front wheel and axle. This can be an easy undertaking with the right tools.
Removing Brake Caliper
The first step to removing the front axle is first to remove the brake caliper. This requires a metric socket set kit, in particular a 14-mm socket.
Axle Pinch Bolt
To loosen the axle pinch bolt on the front fork leg, a 12-mm metric socket is required. Once the pinch bolt is loosened, you can proceed to removing the axle.
Front Axle Removal
To remove the front axle, one first must loosen the front axle with a special tool (Suzuki code 0990Q-18710). This tool also is known as a hexagon bit 12-mm drive. After loosening, the wheel can be lifted off the ground and the front axle removed completely. A motorcycle jack, lift, stand or other device will be required to lift the motorcycle up off the front wheel.

Engine Diagnostic Tools

Vehicle engines are a complex system of wires, moving parts and computerized controls. If an engine is not operational or is running poorly, engine diagnostic tools can help determine the cause of the problem. Such tools can be utilized to check many different engine systems, such as the electrical or computer-driven operations. Other tests can determine if the engines moving parts are in proper working order.
Voltmeter

A voltmeter can take a measurement of the electrical currents flowing through various engine components and can be used to find faulty wiring. The device can also test ignition coils or relay switches to determine if those parts are preventing an engine from starting. Compression Tester

A vehicles compression can be tested manually, which requires a gauge, or, on newer vehicles, electronically. If the compression is tested manually, each of the spark plugs must be removed and the ignition coils must be disabled.
OBD-ii System
Most late-model vehicles are equipped with an OBD-ii system, which stands for on-board diagnostics. This system can be plugged into a OBD reader that can then interpret data obtained by the cars on-board computer system. The reader can often pinpoint malfunctioning engine components. There are three types of OBD-ii systems and those generally are made for the three different types of circuitry: those of European and Chrysler vehicles, those of General Motors vehicles and those of Ford vehicles. The OBD-ii system also captures the reasons that a vehicles check engine light goes on or off. A reputable mechanic will have access to an OBD-ii reader, or the device can be purchased for about $200.

Tools for Alignment

The alignment of a vehicle is the angle at which each tire sits. There are three different angles when alignment readings are taken: camber, caster and toe. Camber is the lean of the tires looking from the front of the vehicle. Toe is the direction the tires are pointing from above the vehicle. Caster is the forward or backward lean of the tires from the side of the vehicle; this is not adjustable without aftermarket parts.
Combination Wrench

A combination wrench has both an open and a boxed end on it, both of which are the same size. They come in standard and metric sizes. Combination wrenches are primarily used to loosen the locking nut on the tie rod ends so that the toe angle can be adjusted. They are also used for removing nuts and bolts.
Ratchet

The ratchet is used in combination with a socket to turn nuts and bolts. It has a ratcheting mechanism inside so that you do not have to remove it to reposition the handle. The ratchets function in an alignment is to loosen any bolts holding components in a fixed position and to turn the camber bolts in a strut to perform camber adjustments. Ratchets come in all different lengths and have standard-sized connectors; 1/4-. 1/2-, 3/4- and 7/8-inch are the most common.
Socket

The socket is used in conjunction with the ratchet to loosen bolts and adjust the camber of most vehicles. Sockets vary in length and are primarily deep-well and standard-well. Deep-well socket are used on nuts that are attached to a long stud; this long stud requires a deeper socket. The downside of a deep-well is that you sacrifice torque, and it doesnt always fit in tight spots. The standard-well is used for all other nuts and bolts and provides maximum torque.
Pry Bar
Sometimes a little leverage is needed. This is where pry bars come in handy. These are typically used in two ways: to pry apart rusted toe-adjuster sleeves and to pry the wheel to adjust the camber. Pry bars vary in size, from just a few inches to several feet long.
Steering Wheel Lock

A key part of a good alignment is a straight steering wheel. Mechanics utilize a steering wheel lock to make certain the wheel does not move while adjusting the steering components underneath. This lock has a spring-loaded circular base that is placed on the seat and a U-shaped holder that goes under the steering wheel. The spring-loaded base presses the U-shaped holder against the steering wheel to hold it in place. Without this, the steering wheel is free to move while the alignment is being performed.
Specialty Tools

As with most newer cars, there are some specialty tools. The most common of these specialty tools is a sandbag. Sandbag are used in imported German sedans, such as BMWs. They are designed to simulate the weight of passengers and cargo while the aligned is being performed. The other specialty tool is for newer General Motors vehicles that are equipped with electronic steering. This tool resets the electronic steering sensor to accept the new alignment angles. If this is not used, a light will appear on the dashboard, which only the dealer can reset.

Mercedes W126 Ball Joint Tools
The Mercedes Benz W126 is one of the first S-Class vehicles that Mercedes Benz produced. Manufactured between 1979 and 1991, the W126 had the longest production life of any of the S-Class vehicles to date. The ball joint of the W126 requires a specific removal tool that is more common today but was revolutionary during the early model-years of the W126.
Ball Joint Puller
The ball joint puller is a specialty tool that removes the ball joint from the steering mechanism (control arm) of the Mercedes W126. The C-shaped apparatus has two C-shaped portions, one that connects to the ball joint and one to the control arm. A machined screw with a turning nut attached to it connects the C-shaped pieces. A standard open-faced wrench is used to turn the screw of the ball joint puller, which loosens the ball joint from the steering rods.
Open-faced Wrench
An open-faced wrench is required to turn the fixed turning nut of the ball joint puller designed specifically for the W126. An alternative to the open-faced wrench is an adjustable wrench.
Impact Wrench

Moped Tools

Moped is the term for a type of low-powered, economical motorcycle. Moped is short for motor-pedal because all mopeds used to come equipped with pedals similar to a bicycle. Now the term is frequently applied to scooters even without pedals. There are various tools available made for moped maintenance and repair.
Tire Irons
Getting a flat or needing a new tire is inevitable. At some point, any moped owner will need a tire iron to change tires. Tire irons are generally made of steel and designed specifically so the bike doesnt get damaged during the changing process.
Flywheel Puller
These are used to replace the points and condenser on moped engines. A flywheel puller will allow you to remove the magneto flywheel without causing damage to the engine case or crank shaft. Its best to use a puller designed for your brand of moped.
Tire Pressure Gauge
If you dont properly maintain your tire pressure, you can experience a range of problems, including poor fuel consumption, tire failure, loss of control and faster tire wear. You can keep track of, and maintain, proper tire pressure with a tire pressure gauge.
Spark Plug Wrench
Over time, spark plugs will need to be replaced. You can use a spark plug wrench to remove your mopeds worn-out spark plugs and install new ones. Spark plug wrenches are generally made of steel.
Allen Wrenches
Allen wrenches are sometimes called Allen keys, hex keys or hex wrenches. They are used to drive screws and bolts with a hexagonal head socket. Allen screws and bolts are common on mopeds, and frequently youll find an Allen wrench set in moped tool kits.

Cam Shaft Tools

The camshaft is a steel or iron shaft that engages with the crankshaft via a timing chain to operate the valves that sit over each piston in sequence with piston movement. This shaft runs along the cylinder bank with egg-shaped lobes on it, each set at difference angles. Intake and exhaust valves open and close as the camshaft turns and the lobes engage the pushrods, which connect to the valves. Camshaft tools allow for the aligning of the camshaft among other things.

Engine Valve Grinding Tools

Engine valves open and close to allow in a mixture of air and fuel for combustion, and it is important that they have a good seal for optimal engine performance. A poor seal will leak fuel into the engine and can cause heat damage to the engine. When replacing or repairing valves, the edges must be ground to fit. People began grounding metal thousands of years ago, and similar methods are implemented today. The basic principle of grinding is to rub a metallic edge against an abrasive surface, such as a rock. Modern advancements improve efficiency and quality of grinding.
Mechanics Stethoscope
Similar to a doctors stethoscope, a mechanics stethoscope allows a mechanic to listen to different parts of an engine to determine whether a repair is necessary. The noise resulting from a valve problem is a light clicking while the engine is idle. A mechanics stethoscope minimizes the difficulty in determining the necessity of valve grinding.
Coolant
Coolant must first be applied to both the valve and the grind stone, as the heat from grinding can cause the abrasive to come loose. Todays abrasives are often made with diamond or cubic boron nitride (CBM), which is a manufactured material almost as hard as diamond but capable of withstanding greater temperatures. While the diamond or CBM can withstand the heat from grinding, the mounting brackets may not be capable of withstanding the heat, so coolant is applied to reduce heat while maintaining proper friction.
Grinding Stone
Grinding stones must be specifically matched to the material being ground, so the first step before grinding is to check the type of metal in the valve. Cast iron and stainless steel have different levels of hardness, and having the wrong grinding stone can ruin both the valve and the stone. Some grinding stones will employ a superabrasive, which has greater grinding ability and shorten the time it takes to grind a valve.
Valve Seat Finishing Device
The grinding wheel and abrasive grinds the valve close to the correct size, but the finishing tool grinds within hundredths of an inch, providing the closest possible fit and allowing for a tight seal. The need for such fine adjustments is necessary because the valve head and valve cylinder must accommodate a small amount of oil to prevent engine overheating.
Prussian Blue
Prussian blue is a blue ink that is applied to a finished valve face to check the contact. Applying the ink to the valve face and then turning the face in the valve seat will show if full contact is made on all parts of the valve connection. The valve should only be turned about 1/8 of the way around, as a full turn will give a false indication of connection.
