Warn Winch Techniques

Warn Industries produces a range of off-road equipment for four-wheel drive vehicles, including winches. These winches are usually mounted on the front bumper of an off-road vehicle. If you are ever in a situation where you need to use your Warn winch, youll find that operating one is not as difficult as you might think.

Instructions

    1

Rotate the clutch lever of the winch to disengage the winch clutch, allowing the cable drum to spin freely.

    2

Unhook the winch hook at the end of the wire cable wrapped around the winch drum so that the hook hangs freely. Connect a hook strap to the winch hook.

    3

Choose an anchor point that will not move during the winching process, such as a tree trunk. Ideally, the anchor point should be in line with the direction that the vehicle will be pulled.

    4

Pull the wire cable just enough to reach the anchor point. Pulling farther than the anchor point will cause the cable to twist.

    5

Wrap a choker chain around the anchor point and secure it to the winch hook.

    6

Use a snatch block if no anchor point is found directly in front of the vehicle. Secure the snatch block to the ground in front of the vehicle, then run the winch cable through the block before attaching the cable with a choke chain to the anchor point. This allows you to use an anchor point to the side of the vehicle.

    7

Attach the D-shackle to both ends of the hook strap and also through the hook loop, then tighten the shackle. When the shackle is tight, back it off half a turn.

    8

Rotate the clutch lever to lock the winch drum.

    9

Remove the cap from the solenoid plug.

    10

Plug the remote-control cord into the winch control box remote-control socket.

    11

Turn the winch on using the remote control to take up slack in the cable. Stop when the cable is tight.

    12

Place a heavy blanket over the middle of the cable between the anchor point and winch. This is for safety in the event the cable snaps.

    13

Move any observers or bystanders well away from the vehicle before you begin. Make certain there is nobody in line with the front or back of the vehicle.

    14

    Start the vehicle engine.

    15

Put the vehicle transmission into high gear. If the vehicle has an automatic transmission, put the transmission in Drive (D).

    16

Remain inside the vehicle and use the remote control to begin winching slowly. The cable should wind evenly around the drum without any twists.

    17

Continue winching until the vehicle has been pulled to safe terrain.

    18

Put the vehicle transmission into low gear. If the vehicle has an automatic transmission, put the transmission in Park (P). Engage the vehicle emergency brake.

    19

Detach winch cable from anchor point. Remove cable from snatch block if necessary. Rewind any remaining cable slowly onto the winch drum using the remote control.

    20

Remove the remote-control cord from the control box.

    21

Replace the cap on the solenoid plug.
