How to Fix Large Cracks on a Windshield

How to Fix Large Cracks on a Windshield

If your vehicle gets old enough, chances are your windshield will get chipped or cracked. Replacing an entire windshield can be costly and is not environmentally friendly. In many cases windshields dont need to be replaced, particularly if the damage is minor. Most small chips and cracks can be easily repaired. You can do the job yourself in a few steps.

Instructions

    1

Prepare the windshield by thoroughly cleaning the cracked area. Before you begin the repair process, make sure the windshield is clean, free of debris, and completely dry.

    2

Take a razor blade and scrape off any excess glass particles that might be trapped in the crack itself, as well as any dried sap, bug carcasses, or other debris.

    3

Clean the windshield thoroughly with soap and water, and let dry. Once completely dry, apply the glass cleaner solution.Solutions come in a variety of types, including chemical-based and eco-friendly.

    4

Follow the directions on the auto glass repair kit, making sure you follow the exact steps. The synthetic glass resin used in these kits can be volatile if not applied correctly.

    5

Apply the syringe of liquid glass compound to the inside of the crack, snapping and pulling the syringe across the length of the crack slowly. Use your clock or watch to precisely time these motions so the resin will fill in the crack without allowing any trapped air bubbles.

    6

Fill in the entire crack from end to end with the resin, then let it sit under direct sunlight or ultraviolet lamp. The UV rays will chemically alter the resin from a liquid to a solid state.

    7

Let the resin set for several hours to allow the curing process to finish. Once finished, use your razor blade to scrape any excess resin from the windshield.

How to Install a Windshield in a C3 Corvette

How to Install a Windshield in a C3 Corvette

Your windshield protects you from debris, keeps the roof from caving in during a rollover and helps keep you from being thrown from the car during an accident. You should replace the windshield on your C3 Corvette if it has any long cracks or chips in it. If you have experience working on cars, and the aid of an assistant, you can do the job yourself. You can purchase almost all the tools and supplies from any auto parts retailer.

Instructions

    1

Unscrew the rear view mirror and slide it out. Set aside.

    2

Lift up the wipers and pry them off the car with a large flathead screwdriver positioned between the large nut and the arm. Rock the screwdriver back and forth until the wipers come off. Set them aside.

    3

Seal off the vents on the dashboard with masking tape.

    4

Cut away the windshields rubber gasket by inserting a knife into the rubber next to the windshield glass from inside the Corvette. Cut all the way around, then push the glass out with your hands or feet while a friend wearing gloves catches it from the outside.

    5

Wipe the edge of the windshield opening with a damp cloth. Wipe the sealant off of the replacement gasket. Put the gasket in a sunny place to make it more flexible.

    6

Fit the new gasket around the new windshield with the gaskets slit facing outside the vehicle. Run a bead of sealant along the bottom half channel on the gasket.

    7

Wipe petroleum jelly into the gaskets outer groove, applying a little extra to the top center and bottom center. Starting at the bottom center, put the heavy nylon cord around the outer groove. Leave about a foot length on each end hanging out the bottom center.

    8

Place the windshield into the windshield opening from outside the Corvette. Make sure the cord ends dangle inside the car.

    9

Pull one cord end slowly out and all the way around the frame. This will pull the rubber lip of the gasket into place. Ask your helper to press the gasket onto the outside edge of the vehicle.

    10

Reinstall the rear view mirror and wipers. Wait 48 hours before driving the vehicle.

How to Replace a Windshield on a 93 Ford Escort

You can replace the windshield on your 93 Ford Escort right at home, saving yourself time and money. Your windshield serves a valuable function, and its important to replace it if it becomes chipped or cracked. Replacing the windshield is not extremely difficult, but you must do it precisely so that it continues to protect you properly. To save some money, you may be able to purchase a used Ford Escort windshield that is in good condition from your local auto wrecking yard.

Instructions

    1

Detach one of the base screws on the rear view mirror and slide the mirror out.

    2

Lift up the windshield wipers and pry up the base with a flat-head screwdriver positioned between the nut and the arm. Rock the arm of the windshield wiper with your other hand to remove each windshield wiper.

    3

Cover all the vents on the dashboard with painters tape to prevent pieces of glass from falling into the vents and blowing out later when you turn on the air.

    4

Cut out the rubber gasket all the way around the windshield with a razor knife, taking care not to touch the glass. Push the glass out from inside the Escort. Have a helper catch the glass from the other side.

    5

Clean off the frame, the dashboard and the new gasket with a wet cloth. Place the new gasket in the sun to soften it and make it more moldable.

    6

Put a thin layer of sealant on the bottom part of the gaskets half channel. Fit the gasket onto the windshield, making sure the side with the slit is on the part of the windshield that will be facing outside the vehicle.

    7

Put petroleum jelly in the outer groove of the gasket. Place a heavy 1/16-inch nylon cord around this groove, starting at the bottom center of the windshield and going all the way around. Start with 1 foot of cord hanging out as you begin and end with another foot of rope hanging down.

    8

Position the windshield in the windshield opening from outside the Ford Escort, taking care to allow the loose rope to hang inside the car.

    9

Pull the cord slowly out of the gasket from inside the car all the way around the windshield. This will put the rubber gasket in place. Have your helper press the rubber gasket to the outside of the windshield frame as you pull from the inside so that the gasket doesnt slip off. Allow to cure for 24 hours.

Windshield Wipers Wont Work on My 2000 Buick Park Avenue

Windshield Wipers Wont Work on My 2000 Buick Park Avenue

Like most passenger cars, the windshield wipers on a Buick Park Regal can stop working for a number of reasons. Most wiper problems can be traced to an electrical failure. Some are simple to detect, diagnose and repair; others may require a voltmeter and an intermediate knowledge of electrical systems.

Instructions

    1

Located the fuse box underneath the drivers side of the dashboard. Replace the two fuses that controls the wiper switch and wiper motor. Both fuses are located on the next-to-last row, with a blank fuse holder between them. Test the wipers.

    2

Check to see if the vehicles turn signals are working. Since the turn signal is located on the same switch as the windshield wiper, the switch may need replacing. Its possible for the turn signal to be working if the windshield wiper is not working, but its unlikely that both stop working at the same time without a switch problem.

    3

Inspect wiring underneath the dashboard and hood. Use a small flashlight to look for frayed or broken wires. Debris and regular wear-and-tear can damage wires. Reconnect broken wires, being careful to wrap them in electrical tape, or replace them entirely.

    4

Check the windshield wiper linkage, or the part that moves your Park Avenues wiper blades. If the linkage is bent or damaged, replace it.

    5

Lift the hood, turn the wipers on, and listen for the motor located underneath the wiper linkage. If you cant hear the motor, it may needs replacing.
