Your windshield protects you from debris, keeps the roof from caving in during a rollover and helps keep you from being thrown from the car during an accident. You should replace the windshield on your C3 Corvette if it has any long cracks or chips in it. If you have experience working on cars, and the aid of an assistant, you can do the job yourself. You can purchase almost all the tools and supplies from any auto parts retailer.

Unscrew the rear view mirror and slide it out. Set aside.

Lift up the wipers and pry them off the car with a large flathead screwdriver positioned between the large nut and the arm. Rock the screwdriver back and forth until the wipers come off. Set them aside.

Seal off the vents on the dashboard with masking tape.

Cut away the windshields rubber gasket by inserting a knife into the rubber next to the windshield glass from inside the Corvette. Cut all the way around, then push the glass out with your hands or feet while a friend wearing gloves catches it from the outside.

Wipe the edge of the windshield opening with a damp cloth. Wipe the sealant off of the replacement gasket. Put the gasket in a sunny place to make it more flexible.

Fit the new gasket around the new windshield with the gaskets slit facing outside the vehicle. Run a bead of sealant along the bottom half channel on the gasket.

Wipe petroleum jelly into the gaskets outer groove, applying a little extra to the top center and bottom center. Starting at the bottom center, put the heavy nylon cord around the outer groove. Leave about a foot length on each end hanging out the bottom center.

Place the windshield into the windshield opening from outside the Corvette. Make sure the cord ends dangle inside the car.

Pull one cord end slowly out and all the way around the frame. This will pull the rubber lip of the gasket into place. Ask your helper to press the gasket onto the outside edge of the vehicle.

Reinstall the rear view mirror and wipers. Wait 48 hours before driving the vehicle.

The Chevrolet Corvette is a sports car that has been in continuous production since 1952. The 1991 model belongs to the fourth generation of the Corvette, which includes the 1984 through the 1996 model years. The side mirror mount on the 1991 Corvette is a modular unit that detaches from the vehicle. The procedure for installing the side mirror is the same for all Corvettes made from 1989 to 1996.

Lower the window completely. Remove the cable from the negative battery terminal with a socket wrench to prevent an electrical short circuit or shock while installing the mirror.

Remove the trim panel and water deflector from the interior side of the door with a socket wrench. Disconnect the screws for the accessory mounting plate on the inside of the door to gain access to the electrical connectors for the side mirror.

Disconnect the retainer on the electrical wiring harness for the side mirror, and detach the electrical connector for the mirror. Record the routing for the mirrors wiring harness, so you can route it properly when you install the new mirror.

Remove the retaining nuts for the side mirror with a socket wrench, and detach the mirror unit from the door. Detach the wind deflector from the mirror unit, if you have a convertible.

Connect the wind deflector to the new mirror unit with a socket wrench, if you have a convertible. Mount the mirror unit to the door, and fasten it with the retaining nuts. Attach the electrical connector to the mirror, using the routing you previously recorded as a guide. Attach the retainer for the wiring harness.

Install the accessory mounting plate to the door with a socket wrench. Attach the water deflector and trim panel to the inside of the door. Connect the cable to the negative battery terminal.

You can maximize the power and fuel efficiency of your 1980 Chevrolet Corvette by adjusting the ignition timing to the proper setting. The ignition timing determines when a spark will ignite in the Corvettes internal combustion engine. The ignition timing for the 1980 Chevrolet Corvette should be set to 12 degrees for automatic and manual transmission models, but the ignition timing is set at a different idle speed for each transmission. The 12-degree ignition timing is used on the 5.7-liter V-8 engine. Be careful not to interfere with other moving parts on the engine when you set the ignition timing.

How to Set the Ignition Timing on a 1980 Chevrolet Corvette

Insert the key into the ignition of your Corvette and start the engine. Turn off all accessories, including the radio and air conditioning/heat.

Shift the transmission into "Neutral" and set the emergency brake. Bring the engine to an idle speed of 700 rpm if your car has an automatic transmission or 800 rpm if your car has a manual transmission.

Open the hood and connect the timing light and/or tachometer to the Corvettes battery, the No. 1 spark plug and the main crank pulley.

Observe where the timing mark on the pulley falls -- the correct timing is 12 degrees.

Loosen the distributor lockdown bolt with your wrench. The lockdown bolt is located by the base of the distributor housing.

Disconnect the vacuum hose that is connected to the distributor housing. There are numerous hoses connected to and around your engine but you should only remove the hose connected to the distributor. This will allow you to set the ignition timing.

Rotate the distributor with your hand until the timing mark drifts to 12 degrees.

Tighten the distributor lockdown bolt with your wrench once you have set the timing to 12 BTDC. Reconnect the vacuum hose you removed earlier from the distributor housing. Remove the timing light and/or tachometer.

The car alarm on your 1993 Corvette can save you from having to deal with car theft, but it can also be an annoyance when trying to make minor repairs. The alarm is sensitive, so it may go off during routine maintenance. You can disable your Corvettes car alarm by disconnecting it from its power source. Since the car alarm is wired directly into the cars battery, you can disable the alarm by disconnecting the negative terminal on the Corvettes battery.

Use a socket wrench to loosen the negative terminal labeled with a "-" mark.

Remove the terminal from the battery to disable the car alarm.

The 1982 Corvette was manufactured with only an automatic transmission available. It was the first time since the Corvettes introduction in 1955 that Chevrolet did not offer a manual transmission option. The 1982 Corvettes gas tank is mounted under the rear of car. Occasionally, your gas tank will require replacement due to rust, corrosion or damage.

Strap on your safety goggles. Put the jack under the rear frame of your vehicle and lift the Corvette.

Drain the fuel from the gas tank. Put the drain pan under your gas tank and remove the gas tank from the fuel pump. Disconnect the fuel pump and fuel relay hose with your pliers.

Disconnect the gas tank from your Corvette. Two metal straps hold your Corvettes gas tank in place, mounted by four bolts. Remove the four bolts with your socket wrench set.

Mount your replacement gas tank to your Corvette. Attach the gas tank with the two metal straps and four bolts. Use your socket wrench set to secure the bolts.

Connect the fuel relay hose and fuel pump to your replacement gas tank. Use your pliers to secure the fuel relay hose. Pour the drained fuel into your replacement gas tank.

The C5 Corvette encompasses the 1997 through 2004 model years. All of the C5 models are equipped with four-wheel disc brakes. Removal of a rear rotor is required forits replacement or when you need to work on the rear hub assembly. Warping, cracking or structural failure may necessitate brake rotor replacement. Brake pads wear the rotor over time, requiring their replacement when the rotor thickness no longer meets minimal standards.

Place wheel chocks behind and in front of the front wheels to secure the vehicle. Loosen the lug nuts on the rear wheel one turn with the breaker bar and socket.

Raise the rear of the Corvette using the floor jack and secure with a jack stand on each side of the automobile.

Remove the five lug nuts using a ratchet and socket. Pull the wheel away from the hub assembly and store the wheel in a safe location.

Use a 22 mm socket and ratchet to remove the two bolts securing the caliper bracket to the rear hub assembly.

Slide the caliper assembly off the rotor and use a short length of bailing wire to hang the assembly in the wheel well. This will prevent damage to the hydraulic hose attached to the caliper.

Use both hands to pull the rotor away from the vehicle until it is clear of the wheel studs.
