My Lexus RX 300 Cigarette Lighter Wont Stay In

My Lexus RX 300 Cigarette Lighter Wont Stay In

If your Lexus RX 300 cigarette lighter will not remain in place when pushed inward, there are a few steps you can take to repair the problem. You can fix a cigarette lighter for a Lexus RX 300 as a do-it-yourself project, but if your efforts do not solve the problem, you should take it to your local Lexus dealership for repair service.

Instructions

    1

Retrieve your manual. Then, check the fuse box. The fuse box of a 2001 Lexus RX300 is located behind the coin holder drawer, to the left of the steering column. Check your manual to see which fuses operate the cigarette lighter socket. If the fuse is blown, you will see a small, broken wire in the interior of the plastic shell of the fuse. Replace a blown fuse with a fuse rated for the same amperage.

    2

Pull out the ash tray to gain access to the lighters wiring connector. The 12 volt and ground wires are connected to the socket. Also, identify an L-shaped wire that has a rubber coating. This is a fuse. Find the two small terminals at the bottom of the L-shaped, rubber-coated fuse. Remove the fuse, then bend a paper clip in an L-shape and place it where the L-shaped, rubber coated fuse was positioned. You should position the L-shaped paper clip at the end of the socket.

    3

Remove the ash tray from its panel. Remove any small Phillips screws. Then, remove each spring found on the side of the ash tray.

    4

Disassemble the lighter assembly or lighter housing, by loosening a hex nut at the bottom of the lighter assembly. To accomplish this task, the panel must be off. Then, reassemble the lighter assembly. Check to see if your lighter will stay in position when pushed inward.

    5

Replace the lighter with a standard size cigarette lighter from your local auto parts store. If a fuse is not burned out, and if disassembling and reassembling the lighter socket still does not help the lighter stay in, take your RX 300 to a Lexus dealership.

    6

Explain the problem with the RX300 cigarette lighter fixture, and ask a Lexus service professional to inspect your cigarette lighter socket. The dealership should inspect your RX300 to check for any possible wiring or electrical problems.

How to Find the Code for My 2000 Honda CR V

How to Find the Code for My 2000 Honda CR-V

You can find the code for your 2000 Honda CR-V right at home. The 2000 Honda CR-V comes equipped with an On-Board Diagnostics I computer (OBD-I) that retrieves and stores trouble codes sent to it from various sensors positioned throughout the vehicle. When the computer receives a code, it illuminates a service or warning light on the instrument panel. You can retrieve these codes with a small, computerized device called an OBD I code scanner, available at auto-parts stores or online.

Instructions

    1

Find the OBD port on the underside of the drivers-side dashboard near the steering column. Its the same size and shape as the end of the OBD-I code scanner.

    2

Plug the scanner into this OBD port.

    3

Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the "ON" position, but dont start the engine.

    4

Wait for the scanner to turn itself on. Some code scanners have to be manually turned on, so you may have to find the "on/off" switch.

    5

Select the command "Retrieve Codes" or something similar -- it varies by scanner brand -- and wait for the code scanner to carry out the command. Write the codes it retrieves down on a piece of paper.

    6

Look up the codes in the scanners manual. Unplug the scanner from the port and have the vehicle serviced or repaired based on the diagnostic information obtained from the codes.

How to Register My Own Motorcycle Frames

How to Register My Own Motorcycle Frames

You never have to separately register a motorcycle frame in the United States. If you are going into the custom motorcycle frame business you should stamp each frame with a serial number of your own devising and ship the frames with a "Manufacturers Certificate of Origin" stating that number and when and where you built it. Any frame you build will, by definition, be part of a "special construction" motorcycle. All homemade choppers and kit bikes registered in the United States are considered to be "special constructions." Technically, any registered motorcycle with mismatched serial numbers on the frame and the engine is a special construction. The process of registering a special construction generally follows a few steps.

Instructions

    1

Register a motorcycle with a headlight with a high and low beam, a horn, a left side mirror, fenders and front and rear directional signals. Register a motorcycle that the laws of your state or province consider to be legally "road worthy."

    2

Present a Manufacturers Statement of Origin, or MSO, for your frame, engine and transmission to the Department of Motor Vehicles for the state or province in which you live. Present receipts for and proof that you have paid the local sales tax or you will be charged sales tax for the component parts.

    3

Present your custom construction motorcycle to the motor vehicles department or the state police, depending on where you live, for a road worthiness inspection.

    4

Insure your motorcycle with a recognized motorcycle insurance carrier in your state or province in order to complete your registration.

Why Does Water Leak From My Exhaust

Water leaking from the exhaust pipe of a car is caused by the catalytic converter and the condensation of water vapor, according to autoupkeep.com. This is normal and nothing to worry about.

Combustion

The combustion of gasoline produces carbon dioxide and water vapor, according to chemistryland.com. Oxygen reacts with hydrogen in gasoline to produce water vapor, which exits the engine through the exhaust manifold.

Exhaust System

The exhaust, which includes carbon monoxide, nitrous carbon dioxide, water vapor and unburned gasoline are processed by the catalytic converter, which changes the gasoline to more carbon dioxide and water and directs them into the muffler.

Other Facts

In hot weather, the water vapor is less likely to condense and drain, but in cold weather, water vapor will do exactly that and drip from the tailpipe. Over time, water in the exhaust system can cause corrosion.

How to Set End Play in the Front Wheel on My Harley Davidson

How to Set End Play in the Front Wheel on My Harley Davidson

From 1973 until 2000 all Harley-Davidson models used tapered Timkin wheel bearings on both the front and rear wheels. Since 2000 all Harleys have used sealed wheel bearings on both wheels. The current wheel bearings go on and come off as a unit with a bearing puller/installation tool. End play on the sealed bearings is pre-set. Only 1999 and earlier Harleys require that wheel bearing end play be set during installation and servicing. Sealed wheel bearing kits are available for older bikes. The sealed bearings should last 100,000 miles and the old bearings must be serviced every 10,000 miles. But it is a matter of debate as to whether the old bearings are superior to the new ones.

Instructions

    1

Torque the axle nut to 60 pounds of torque, or to the torque specified in the service manual for your motorcycle if different, with a hex socket and a torque wrench after reinstalling the wheel bearings, axle and spacers.

    2

Mount a magnetic dial indicator on the front fender, forks or brake caliper so you can measure the lateral movement of the axle in the wheel.

    3

Push and pull the wheel along the lateral axis of the axle while reading the measurements on the dial indicator. If the end play is greater than 0.18 inches the wheel bearing must be shimmed.

    4

Remove the axle nut, axle, spacer and wheel bearing assembly with a socket wrench and socket if necessary. Insert an axle shim of one of the five commonly available thicknesses, between .002 and .032 inches, on the axle next to the spacer if necessary and replace the wheel bearing assembly.

    5

Re-tighten the axle nut to 60 pounds of torque, or to the torque specified in the service manual for your motorcycle if different, with a hex socket and a torque wrench.

    6

Re-measure the axle end play with the magnetic dial indicator. Repeat as necessary. Repack the wheel bearings with lithium grease and continue wheel assembly when the end play measures between .004 and 018 inches.

My 1997 Chrysler Concorde Wont Start When the Engine Is Hot

The Chrysler Concorde began production in 1993 and ran until 2004. The Concorde is a four-door sedan that comes with an automatic transmission. If your 1997 Chrysler Concorde isnt starting after the engine gets hot, you might have a problem with your cooling system. You dont have to be a car mechanic to figure out what is wrong with your Concorde. You can figure it out yourself.

Instructions

    1

Turn the Concorde off and remove the key from the ignition. Allow the car to sit for about three to four hours so the engine cools. Open the hood to the Concorde to allow the engine to cool quicker.

    2

Locate the coolant tank on the left side of the engine. Look on the side of the coolant tank for the fill lines (labeled "coolant"). They will be translucent so you can see how much coolant is inside the tank.

    3

Use a funnel to fill the tank with more coolant. You can find coolant at a local department store or at an auto shop. Fill the tank to the fill line with 50/50 coolant.

    4

Look underneath your Concorde to look for any coolant leaks, which could be from the water pump. Get a mechanic to look over the water pump and make sure it does not need replacement.

My Turbo Diesel Isuzu Trooper Wont Start

My Turbo Diesel Isuzu Trooper Wont Start

The turbo diesel in your Isuzu Trooper is perred by some drivers because of the fuel economy. If you are having problems with the turbo diesel engine, there are a few things that you can do before you take it in for service. You can check common issues yourself with little hassle.

Instructions

    1

Turn the key in your Troopers ignition to engage the instrument panel. Make a note of the fuel gauges level. If you dont have enough gas to start the Trooper, fill the tank up with gas and then try to start the vehicle.

    2

Replace the fuel with the proper kind of diesel. Summer diesel can get cloudy in winter months. This can cause the fuel filter to clog.

    3

Raise the Trooper with a jack to check the starter. Have a friend turn the ignition and listen for the starter to buzz. The starter is the small black box next to the engine. If the starter buzzes or clicks, you need to have it replaced by a service technician.

    4

Look at the bottom of your Trooper for any fuel or liquid leaks. Have any leaks checked by a certified mechanic.

    5

Use a voltmeter to test the battery. Check the battery sticker to get the volt rating. Most diesel engines use a 6.5 V battery. Connect the leads from the voltmeter to the battery terminals on the top of the battery. If you dont get the 6.5 V reading, have the battery replaced or jump the car.

My 2003 Chevy Trailblazer Wont Start

My 2003 Chevy Trailblazer Wont Start

The 2003 Chevy Trailblazer is mid-sized SUV. If your Trailblazer will not start, you could be looking at a problem with the battery or the fuel level in your SUV. When the battery charge is too low, the engine will not be able to start. The engine runs on gas so you need a sufficient fuel level to get the motor running. You can troubleshoot the problems with your Trailblazer with little knowledge of the subject before you go see a mechanic.

Instructions

    1

Open the hood to your Trailblazer and locate the battery next to the engine.

    2

Take a socket wrench and loosen the battery terminals. Look the battery terminals over for any corrosion. Use a wire brush and soda to get rid of the corrosion.

My Hood Wont Latch

My Hood Wont Latch

Most automobiles contain a drivers side cable that causes the latch on the hood to open when you pull it. If your hood does not latch, you might have a broken latch cable or an issue with the assembly of the latch. But if the problem is less complex, such as a latch mechanism that is simply stuck in the open position, you can fix it easily enough.

Instructions

    1

    Prop your vehicles hood open.

    2

Spray the hood latch with WD-40. Give the solution about five minutes to absorb into the mechanism.

    3

Moisten the latch cables with the WD-40. If they are inside a rubber compartment, such as a rubber guide, insert the can of WD-40 at the tip of the opening and shoot the lubricant onto the cables. Otherwise, spray the lubricant directly onto the cables.

    4

Grab the latch with your hands and push it until it closes. Move the latch back and forth until it opens and closes with ease. The hood should now latch when you attempt to close it.

How to Get the Smoker Smell Out of My Car

How to Get the Smoker Smell Out of My Car

If you or a family member smokes or if youve purchased a used car owned by a smoker, it is likely youll need to air out the car to remove the smoker smell. In some cases, simply airing out the car will not remove the deeply embedded smoke smell. Instead, youll have to use common household products to remove the smell from the upholstery and hard surfaces.

Instructions

    1

Vacuum the car thoroughly with the upholstery attachment of your hose vacuum. Vacuum the seats, dashboard and trunk. Pull out the rugs and vacuum them. Vacuum the floors and under the seats. This will ensure youve removed all of the ash or any cigarette butts.

    2

Dampen a clean cloth with white vinegar and rub it over the dashboard and the hard surfaces inside the car. This will help neutralize the smell. It may leave a pungent vinegar odor that will dissipate.

    3

Sprinkle baking soda over all of the surfaces. Leave the baking soda on the surfaces for several hours to give it time to absorb the smoke smell. Vacuum up the baking soda when it has absorbed the smell.

    4

Pour white vinegar into a bowl and put it inside the car if the smell is remains noticeable. Roll up the windows and shut all of the doors. Leave the vinegar in the car overnight. The vinegar will help neutralize the smell.

    5

Place a bowl full of charcoal if the smell remains. Roll up the windows and shut the door. Leave the car alone for at least one day before removing the charcoal. The charcoal will neutralize the smell and absorb some of it.

How to Raise the Rev Limiter on My Harley Davidson

How to Raise the Rev Limiter on My Harley Davidson

Although the parameter is commonly called the rev limiter, it is more accurately called the rpm limit, and it is a function of the electronic ignition. A stock Harley-Davidson has a limit of 5,500 revolutions per minute. Usually, on a Big Twin, about the time you hit 60 or 65 miles per hour in second gear, the engine will begin to sputter and miss. Crusty old bikers who remember mechanical points will mutter about "hitting the rev limiter," but there is no rev limiter. You change the rpm limit by installing an electronic ignition with a programmable rpm limit. Crane makes ignitions with rev limits that can be set as high as 9,900 rpm.

Instructions

Remove Old Ignition

    1

Remove the seat by loosening the Allen or Phillips screw in the fender tab on the back of the seat with an Allen wrench or a Phillips screwdriver.

    2

Disconnect the negative battery terminal from the negative battery post with an open-end wrench.

    3

Disconnect the spark plug wires from the coil. Remove the two remaining wires, positive and negative, from the front of the coil with a small open-end wrench.

    4

Disconnect the plug -- called the VOES connector -- that attaches the wiring harness of the vacuum operated electrical switch to the front wiring harness.

    5

Drill out the two rivets on the "points cover" on the lower right side of the motorcycle with an electric drill. Remove the points cover.

    6

Loosen the two flat-head screws inside the points cover. Remove the inner cover and gasket.

    7

Disconnect the sensor plate cable plug with needle-nose pliers. Pull the sensor plate cable through the hole at the bottom of the timing cover.

    8

Draw a line from the V-notch on the sensor plate to the ignition housing, using a grease pencil.

    9

Remove the two sensor plate screws and washers with a flat-head screwdriver. Remove the sensor plate.

Install New Ignition

    10

Install a Crane Hi-4 ignition or the equivalent in place of the sensor plate. Push the new ignition cable through the hole at the bottom of the timing cover.

    11

Align the V-notch on the Crane HI-4 ignition with the grease pencil mark on the ignition housing. Loosely attach the new ignition with the original sensor plate screws and the lock washers included with the ignition.

    12

Route the new ignition wiring harness along the frame rails to the coil. Secure the new harness to the frame with cable ties.

    13

Connect the black (positive) and white (negative) coil wires from the new ignition wiring harness to the positive and negative terminals on the coil, using a small open-end wrench. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the negative battery post with an open-end wrench.

    14

Replace the seat and fasten the seat tab to the rear fender with a Phillips screwdriver or an Allen wrench. Attach the green wire in the new ignition wiring harness to the VOES connector.

    15

Set the "mode select" dial on the new ignition to "6." Set the two rpm limiter switches to the desired setting. Set the "advance slope" dial to "6."

    16

Set the two rpm selector dials to the desired rpm limit, divided by 100. For example, you would achieve an rpm limit of 5,500 by setting both dials to "5." For an rpm limit of 6,800, you would set the first dial to "6" and the second dial to "8."

Static Timing New Ignition

    17

Put the Harley in the top gear. Raise it on a motorcycle jack until the rear wheel is off the ground.

    18

Remove the front spark plug with a spark plug socket and a socket wrench. Peer into the spark plug hole.

    19

Rotate the rear wheel and the engine until the front cylinder is at the top of its stroke. Do not move the rear wheel.

    20

Remove the timing hole plug in the crankcase with a hex socket and socket wrench. Screw a timing view plug into the same hole in the crankcase.

    21

Confirm that a double line, which is the top dead center timing mark, is visible in the timing view plug.

    22

Turn on the ignition. Confirm that the LED on the new electronic ignition is illuminated.

    23

Rotate the new ignition module by hand until the LED goes out. Tighten the sensor plate screws with a flat-head screwdriver.

    24

Turn off the ignition. Reinstall the front spark plug.

    25

Lower the motorcycle jack and remove. Remove the timing view plug and reinstall the timing hole plug with a hex socket and a socket wrench.

    26

Reattach the points cover with the gasket included with the ignition kit. Secure the points cover to the ignition housing with the two self-threading screws included with the ignition, using a screwdriver.

How Do I Change My Muffler

Replacing a muffler can be a rewarding job that is quickly completed with a few tools---or it can be the task from Hades. A simple look at the muffler will help you determine which way the job will likely go and help make the decision about doing it yourself easier. If its held on with bolted flanges, it should go well. Replacing a muffler held on with U clamps might require special tools and be a job better left to experts.

Taking Off a Flanged Muffler

A muffler held to the pipe with bolted flanges will have one of two bolt arrangements securing the flanges together. Look closely at the flange. What looks like a bolt may actually be a stud and will require much more care to remove. Examine both ends of the bolt to see if it or the nut is welded to one flange. If it is, care must be taken to get the nut off without damaging the stud. Use a penetrating oil or heat to help break up rust on the threads before attempting to remove the bolt or nut.

Some bolts are through bolts and can turn freely in the flange holes once loosened slightly. If you are certain your muffler flange uses these bolts, you may find it is easier to cut them in half and replace them with a new bolt. Use a reciprocating saw or hand hacksaw to cut them.

Once the flange is unbolted spray the rubber hangers with a light oil, such as WD40 and remove them from the brackets on the muffler. This is easily done with a pair of arc joint pliers.

Removing a Clamped-On Muffler

Be aware that replacing this muffler will be difficult. You must cut the U clamps off and then separate both ends of the muffler from the pipes. Generally, this will require careful work with a hammer and chisel. An air hammer with a chisel designed to split the pipes is much faster if you have access to this tool, and a cutting torch is much faster, but this is not the place to learn to use one.

Once the muffler nipple is split, you can work the pipe out of it. It isnt easy to do because of rust and the deformation of the pipe caused by the clamp. Avoid hammering on the pipes, try to remove them with twisting and pulling. It may be necessary to split the muffler nipple in two or three places before the pipe will separate from it.

Installing the New Muffler

Use a new gasket when installing a flanged muffler. Place the bolts through the flange and use them to hold the gasket while you slide the muffler in place. Tighten the bolts securely but dont over tighten. Finish up by lubing the rubber hangers and pushing them on to the muffler brackets.

If your muffler is secured to the exhaust pipes with U clamps, it will be necessary to install the muffler on to the pipe a distance equal to the length of the nipple on the muffler. Slide the muffler on while twisting and pushing it in place. If it does not readily slide on to the pipe, you may need to rent a pipe expander and enlarge the nipple slightly. Once the pipes are installed in the muffler ends, install the proper-sized U clamp and tighten securely.

Check your work

The last step in replacing your own muffler is to start the engine and check for leaks. If any are found simply tighten the clamps or bolts tighter. This should eliminate the leaks.

Will Removing the Catalytic Converter Damage My Vehicle

Will Removing the Catalytic Converter Damage My Vehicle?

Plugging of the catalytic converter is a frequent problem experienced by many vehicle owners. Many individuals choose to remove the converter completely or hollow the inside of the honeycomb out.

Purpose of the Converter

The catalytic converter serves to reduce harmful emissions that automobiles release into the air. The primary pollutant that is minimized is carbon monoxide, which is reduced to incredibly low levels to have a smaller impact on the environment. Many states have emissions inspections that are conducted on a yearly basis to ensure the catalytic converter is working correctly.

Impact of Removal

When a catalytic converter is damaged or removed, a few different clues signify it. The fuel economy of a vehicle will drop without a converter, along with a lack of power. If pressure is excessive due to the converter being plugged, you may experience frequent stalling or rough idling.

Detrimental Effects

Other impacts of removing the converter include risking damage to the other components, primarily the oxygen sensor, which works in conjunction with the catalytic converter. This may also cause the check engine light to come on, which will cause the vehicle to fail an emissions test.

If My Tire Size Is 265 75 15 Can I Use a 265 75 16 Tire

If My Tire Size Is 265/75/15, Can I Use a 265/75/16 Tire?

At first glance, tire size numbering can be confusing. You may wonder if a 265/75/15 tire is interchangeable with a 265/75/16 tire. Once you understand the tire sizing format, it will become apparent what tires are compatible with your rim size.

Rim size

The most important information about tire interchangeability is the rim size, which is the last number in the display. For a 265/75/R15 tire, the R15 signifies a 15-inch rim. A 265/75/R16 tire is for a 16-inch rim and will not fit a 15-inch rim.

Tire section width

The first number in the tire size after the letter signifies a tire section width. If the number is 265/75/R15, this means the width is 265 millimeters.

Sidewall aspect ratio

The number after the first slash in the tire size is the sidewall aspect ratio. For example, the tire 265/75/R15 has a sidewall that is 75 percent of the width. It is indicates the height of the tire from where it connects to the rim to the tread.

Tire Lettering

Tire type is the first character in the display, such as P265/75/R15. P signifies use on a passenger car. LT signifies light truck tires, T a temporary spare tire. An LT tire of the same size as your previous P tire could be used as a temporary replacement, but this is not recommended.

My Chevrolet 7.4 Wont Run

The Chevrolet 7.4-liter engine is primarily used in Suburbans. When having problems with your 7.4, there are several things to do before taking it to a repair shop. Common issues include the battery, fuel and starter problems. You can diagnose these minor problems. However, a qualified mechanic should always perform major repairs.

Instructions

    1

Turn the key in the ignition and listen for any sounds coming from the engine. If you hear "clicking" then a technician should test the alternator on a diagnostic machine.

    2

Turn the ignition halfway to turn on the instrument panel. Look over the instrument panel to make sure you have enough fuel to start the engine (if not, add about 1 gallon of gas).

    3

Open the hood of the vehicle and look over the battery connections. If you find the battery connections loose, tighten them with a pair of channel locks or pliers. Try to restart the car. If the car will not start, the charge might be low.

    4

Use a voltmeter to test the battery. Connect the positive and negative leads of the voltmeter to the positive and negative leads on your battery. Look over the reading. If the reading is under 11 to 12 volts, you need to charge the battery.

    5

Connect a battery charger to the positive and negative terminals on the battery. Plug the battery charger into an electrical outlet and let the unit sit for about 12 hours. Try to restart the vehicle after 12 hours. If the vehicle does not start, you need to replace the battery.

    6

Get under the vehicle and look for the starter. The starter is a small black box on the right side of the engine. With the emergency brake engaged and the car in "Park," have a friend turn the ignition and listen for a "buzzing" noise coming from the starter. If you hear the buzzing, you need to have the starter replaced by a service technician.

My Mercedes 320 Wont Start

My Mercedes 320 Wont Start

The Mercedes 320 is a four-door sedan. If you are having problems getting your 320 to start, there is probably something wrong with your fuel levels or your battery. The battery for the 320 is located in the trunk of the car. Jump starting your 320 is a good way to give the battery the spark it needs to charge properly. Adding gas to the fuel tank could also be the quick remedy you need.

Instructions

    1

Turn the key to your 320 to engage the fuel gauge. Look at the fuel level and determine if you need gas. Add gas as needed and then start the car. If the gas gauge doesnt come on, you probably have a problem with your battery.

    2

Pop the trunk and locate the battery on the right side of the trunk. Connect the positive and negative clamps from your jumper wires to the positive and negative terminals on the battery.

    3

Connect the other ends of the jumper wires to a running cars battery terminals. Start your 320.

    4

Leave the 320 running for a little while so the battery can charge. Turn the car off and then try to restart the car.

    5

Replace the battery if the car will not restart.

Windshield Wipers Wont Work on My 2000 Buick Park Avenue

Windshield Wipers Wont Work on My 2000 Buick Park Avenue

Like most passenger cars, the windshield wipers on a Buick Park Regal can stop working for a number of reasons. Most wiper problems can be traced to an electrical failure. Some are simple to detect, diagnose and repair; others may require a voltmeter and an intermediate knowledge of electrical systems.

Instructions

    1

Located the fuse box underneath the drivers side of the dashboard. Replace the two fuses that controls the wiper switch and wiper motor. Both fuses are located on the next-to-last row, with a blank fuse holder between them. Test the wipers.

    2

Check to see if the vehicles turn signals are working. Since the turn signal is located on the same switch as the windshield wiper, the switch may need replacing. Its possible for the turn signal to be working if the windshield wiper is not working, but its unlikely that both stop working at the same time without a switch problem.

    3

Inspect wiring underneath the dashboard and hood. Use a small flashlight to look for frayed or broken wires. Debris and regular wear-and-tear can damage wires. Reconnect broken wires, being careful to wrap them in electrical tape, or replace them entirely.

    4

Check the windshield wiper linkage, or the part that moves your Park Avenues wiper blades. If the linkage is bent or damaged, replace it.

    5

Lift the hood, turn the wipers on, and listen for the motor located underneath the wiper linkage. If you cant hear the motor, it may needs replacing.
