How to Replace the Water Pump on a 2001 Grand Cherokee 6 Cylinder

The Grand Cherokee is a mid-size sport utility vehicle produced by the Jeep division of Chrysler. The WJ versions of this vehicle include the 1999 to 2004 models and represent a complete redesign over the previous Grand Cherokee. The most common engine in the 2001 Grand Cherokee is a 6-cylinder, 4.0-liter engine. The replacement of the water pump on this engine requires you to remove additional components to access the water pump.

Instructions

    1

Allow the vehicle to sit over night to ensure the coolant will not burn you. Place a container under the radiator drain and remove the drain cock. Drain the contents of the radiator into the container and replace the drain cock. Store the coolant for later use.

    2

Disconnect the cable for the negative battery terminal with a socket wrench so you dont start the engine inadvertently. Detach the electrical connector for the cooling fan and remove the accessory drive belt. Disconnect the cooling fan and its pulley from the engine.

    3

Remove the retaining bolts for the water pump pulley with a socket wrench and disconnect the power steering pump. Detach the coolant hose and heater hose from the water pump. Disconnect the mounting bolts for the water pump and remove the water pump. Discard the gasket for the water pump.

    4

Clean the mating surfaces of the water pump and engine to remove any traces of the old gasket. Place a new gasket onto the new water pump and install the water pump to the engine. Torque the mounting bolts for the water pump to 17 foot-pounds with a torque wrench.

    5

Attach the heater hose and radiator hose to the water pump. Install the water pump pulley and torque its mounting bolts to 20 foot-pounds. Connect the power steering pump and the cooling fan assembly. Torque the mounting bolts for the cooling fan to 31 inch-pounds. Install the accessory drive belt and attach the electrical connector for the cooling fan.

    6

How to Replace a Headlight Bulb in a 99 Grand AM

How to Replace a Headlight Bulb in a 99 Grand AM

The 1999 Pontiac Grand Am uses a single bulb to provide both low beams and high beams. These encapsulated, halogen bulbs produce illumination through high-temperature gas. The capsules last longer and burn brighter than older, sealed-beam headlights used on the cars of the 1960s and 1970s. One drawback of halogen bulbs, however, is that contact with skin can weaken the glass bulbs due to alkaline in the skin, causing the bulbs to expire prematurely.

Instructions

    1

Ensure the key is not in the ignition of the 1999 Pontiac Grand Am and the headlight switch is in the "Off" position.

    2

    Open the hood.

    3

Remove the eight push-pin clips on the splash guard that runs along the radiator rail. Use the needle-nose pliers to pull up on the center pin of the clips to unlock them and then remove the clips, making sure to keep track of the two different sizes, as you will replace them later.

    4

Locate the two upside-down, L-shaped brackets at the rear of the headlight assembly. Lift each bracket up about an inch. Use the pliers to help pull the brackets up, if necessary.

    5

Wiggle the headlight assembly forward, away from the Grand Am, being caul not to scratch the lens or the paint on the car. There are three guide pins that align the assembly and headlights in place. It may take some wiggling of the assembly to dislodge the guide pins.

    6

Pull the headlight assembly forward far enough to reach in behind it with one hand, while supporting the assembly with the other.

    7

Disconnect the wire harness plug going into the headlight bulb socket.

    8

Turn the headlight bulb bezel counterclockwise about one-third of a turn to align the retaining tabs to the notches and then remove the bezel and headlight bulb from the back of the assembly.

    9

Put on the latex gloves before getting the replacement bulb, to avoid accidentally touching the glass bulb.

    10

Place the bulb into the bezel and then insert the bulb and bezel into the headlight assembly, properly aligning the retaining tabs to the correct notches. Once the bulb and bezel are in place, turn the bezel clockwise one-third turn to lock it into place.

    11

Plug the wire harness back into the headlight bulb socket and then align the guide pins of the headlight assembly to their respective seats. Push inward on the assembly to seat the guide pins.

    12

Test the headlight bulb by turning the ignition key and then the headlight switch before pushing the retaining brackets back into place. Remove the tools and close the hood when finished.

Replacing Drivers Side Mirror on a 98 Pontiac Grand Prix

The 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix has painted side mirrors to match the paint color of the vehicle. Aftermarket replacement mirrors often come with a black finish. These mirrors can be painted to closely match the color of the car or they can be left in black finish. While aftermarket direct-fit mirrors are much more affordable than OEM equipment from the dealership, if matching the color of the mirrors is important, buying the mirror from the dealership would be a better option.

Instructions

    1

Open the drivers side door and power the window down. Remove the key from the ignition.

    2

Fit the angled pry tool under the bottom of the window control module on the arm rest assembly. Pry off the module.

    3

Unplug the four wire harness connections attached to the underside of the control module. The plugs are color coded and only fit in their respective outlets, so keeping track of which one goes where for reassembly is not required.

    4

Pry off the two plastic beauty caps from underneath the arm rest assembly with the pry tool to reveal the door panel retaining screws. Remove the screws with the Phillips screwdriver.

    5

Remove the interior door lector from the inner housing of the lector with the pry tool.

    6

Pry off the small speaker cover on top of the door panel opposite the side mirror.

    7

Move the door panel away from the door frame with the pry tool. Start at the bottom and work up each side to release the snap pins from the underside of the panel. Lift the door panel slightly to remove the upper lip from the door frame. Reach behind the panel to disconnect the speaker wire harness plug. Set the door panel aside.

    8

Disconnect the mirror wire harness plug.

    9

Remove the three retaining nuts of the mirror with the 10-mm nut driver. The mirror may stick to the door from the original gasket, but brace one hand under it when removing the last nut in case it doesnt. This will prevent the original mirror from scratching the exterior paint on the door.

    10

Install the new mirror. Replace the retaining nuts and attach the mirror harness plugs together. Reattach the speaker cover, lower speaker wire and door panel assembly by reversing the removal procedure. Reattach the door lector and plug the harnesses back into the window control module before snapping the module back into place.

    11

Replace the two door panel retaining screws. Snap the beauty caps back into place below the arm rest assembly.

How to Replace Headlight Lamps in a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix

How to Replace Headlight Lamps in a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix

The 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix uses a single unit headlight with a dual internal filament for the low and high beams. While this simplifies the location of the headlight bulb, its not uncommon for one of the filaments to become faulty while the other still works, and this requires the replacement of the bulb. When handling the replacement bulb(s), its important to avoid skin contact with the glass bulb portion. Halogen headlights burn extremely hot, and oils, perspiration or other contaminants on skin will create a weak spot on the bulb and compromise its life.

Instructions

    1

Open the hood of the Pontiac Grand Prix after making sure the headlight switch is in the "Off" position. Apply the parking brake for added safety if desired.

    2

Look for the Phillips head screw on top of the junction of the headlight assembly and the marker/directional light assembly. Loosen the screw about 1/4 of an inch with a Phillips head screwdriver. The loosened screw will act like a hinge for easier removal of the assembly.

    3

Locate the headlight assembly retaining bolts on top of the radiator rail at each rear edge of the assembly. Remove the bolts with a ratchet and 10 mm socket.

    4

Wiggle the headlight assembly and the marker/directional light assembly back and forth to pivot the two assemblies on the hinge screw until they come out as a connected unit from their cavity (just far enough to reach a hand behind to access the faulty headlight).

    5

Disconnect the blue-capped wire harness plug from the headlight socket.

    6

Twist the headlight socket a 1/4 turn counterclockwise to remove it from the assembly.

    7

Align the tabs on the replacement headlight (being caul not to touch the glass bulb) to the grooves of the headlight assembly and push it slightly inward before turning it clockwise a 1/4 turn.

    8

Plug the wire harness connection back into the headlight socket. With the headlight assembly resting on the shelf of the cavity/bumper, test the headlights before putting the assemblies in place. Be sure to test both low and high beams for operation.

    9

Reinstall the headlight assembly and the marker/directional assembly in place by reversing the removal procedure. Replace the headlight assembly retaining bolts, tighten the hinge screw, remove the tools and close the hood.

Pontiac Grand AM 1995 Troubleshooting

The 1995 Pontiac Grand AM is a coupe that has a 2.4 liter four-cylinder engine. If you are having problems with your 95 Grand AM, there are a couple of things that you can troubleshoot yourself before you take the car into a service shop. Common issues reside with the power steering, the battery, and the fuel. You can alleviate these problems without training in automobiles. Getting your problems fixed will get you back on the road in no time.

Instructions

    1

Lift the hood to the Grand Am and look fro the power steering fluid tank next to the engine. Look for the fill line on the tank and make sure that you have enough fluid in the tank. Fill the tank with power steering fluid if needed.

    2

Look over the coolant levels to make sure you have enough coolant if your Grand AM is overheating. The coolant system is right by the power steering fluid tank. Add 50/50 coolant to the tank until the coolant level is at the fill line.

    3

Check over the battery on the right side of the engine. The battery should have tight connections from the cable to the battery terminals. If the connections are loose, tighten them with a pair of channel locks or pliers.

    4

Test the battery with a voltmeter if your car wont start. Place the testing leads on the battery terminals according to the color of the leads. If you get anything less than 11 volts from the test, you should charge your battery.

    5

Turn the key in your ignition and look over the fuel levels. If you dont have enough fuel in the gas tank, you car will not be able to start. Fill the gas tank as needed to get the car starter.

How to Add Refrigerant to a 2000 Grand Marquis

How to Add Refrigerant to a 2000 Grand Marquis

Lack of refrigerant is one of the most common causes of air conditioning system problems. A vehicle with no refrigerant in its A/C system will not blow cold air. One way to add refrigerant is to take the car to a mechanic. However, if you would like to save a few dollars, you can fix the problem yourself. Adding refrigerant to a 2000 Grand Marquis should take no more than 30 minutes.

Instructions

    1

Consult your owners manual to determine the right refrigerant for your car model and purchase the refrigerant.

    2

Connect the pressure gauge and the service hose to the lip of the refrigerant can. Form a tight seal between the service hose and the refrigerant can.

    3

Open the valve on the refrigerant can slowly to allow a small amount of refrigerant into the service hose. Close the valve on the refrigerant can.

    4

Connect the end of the service hose that is not attached to the refrigerant can to the low-pressure service fitting on your vehicle. On a 2000 Grand Marquis, this pressure service fitting is located underneath the hood near the compressor. Identify the pressure service fitting by locating a thin hose covered by a plastic cap near the compressor.

    5

Turn the ignition on and allow the car to start. Turn the air conditioner to its maximum setting.

    6

Open the valve on the refrigerant can fully to allow refrigerant to flow into your vehicles compressor.

    7

Fill your compressor until the pressure gauge reaches the recommended range of your vehicle. Consult your owners manual to determine the recommended range.

    8

Turn off the ignition on your car and disconnect the service hose from the pressure service fitting.
