What Is Late Timing in a BMW Car
Late timing in a BMW is no different than late timing in the combustion engine of any car. Late timing refers to the state of combustion in the engine and exhaust system.
What is Late Timing
Late timing refers to the timing of the spark to ignite the fuel within the cylinders. When the spark fires late, the exhaust temperatures tend to go too high as the exhaust valves open before combustion is complete. As the combustion was not complete, some additional combustion may occur in the exhaust system.
Potential Problems
The most obvious drawback is a lowering of engine efficiency and overall fuel efficiency, as the engine does not get the full benefit of the combustion cycle. The car is also apt to run more sluggishly. Also, since full combustion is not occurring, carbon may build up on the valves and possibly build up in the catalytic converter.
Potential Solutions
The make and model provide so many variables to consider as equipment has changed dramatically over the years. Adjustments to the distributor can be considered. Additionally, camshaft or crankshaft sensors may require adjustment. Newer cars have engine computers that typically self-correct per the information that the sensors feed them. If this is not occurring, most likely a faulty sensor is the cause.
