How to Loosen Rusted Exhaust Nuts

How to Loosen Rusted Exhaust Nuts

Exhaust systems are constantly subjected to wet conditions over the years; because of this, the nuts and bolts that hold the exhaust system in place can become rusted, bonding together. When the time comes to loosen the nuts, doing so can seem impossible. There are a variety of solutions to this problem; some of the solutions must be combined to do the job effectively. Loosening the nuts properly can eliminate damage to the exhaust system and to the harness holding it to the vehicle.

Instructions

    1

Put on gloves and safety glasses. Spray or apply anti-seize solvent on the nut and bolt until theyre saturated. Allow this solution to soften the rust for the amount of time recommended on the anti-seize product label. Try to loosen the nut with a wrench. If the nut doesnt budge, scrape away as much of the loosened rust as possible with a flat-head screwdriver and spray more anti-seize solvent on the nut and bolt threads.

    2

Put the wrench on the nut again and see if the nut will loosen. Some nuts are right-hand threaded and others are left-hand threaded. Try loosening the nut counter-clockwise, then clockwise. If the nut doesnt budge, put the appropriate-size socket on an impact gun and try to get the nut to break loose.

    3

Scrap away any loosed rust with the flat-head screwdriver. Heat the nut with a torch until red-hot. The heated nut will expand, making it larger than the bolt on which it is threaded. Put the impact gun on the nut and bust it loose. If this doesnt work, grind off the nut with an orbital grinder and a grinding bit. Use a new nut when replacing the exhaust system.
