How to Use a Flywheel Turner

A flywheel turner allows you to rotate the crankshaft and hold it in place when assembling an engine or working on clutches and transmissions, all jobs that require the crankshaft to be placed in a specific position. The teeth surrounding the outside of a flywheel make it hard to turn by hand and "bumping" the starter can run the flywheel past the required position. A flywheel turner grabs onto the teeth of the flywheel, allowing you to move the flywheel into position without causing damage to the flywheel or your hands.

Instructions

    1

Hold the flywheel turner in your dominant hand, with the curved arm of the tool facing your right-hand side.

    2

Set the hook at the end of the curved arm onto a flywheel tooth.

    3

Pull the handle along the circumference of the flywheel until you feel pressure on the tool handle. Push the flat tip located on the end of the handle into the gap between two flywheel teeth.

    4

Push the handle to your left-hand side to rotate the flywheel. Stop pushing when you have the flywheel positioned.

    5

Pull the handle toward the curved arm to release the tool from the flywheel when the crankshaft sits in position. Turn the tool to face the curved arm to your left-hand side. Attach the tool to the flywheel as described earlier. Push the handle to your right to move the flywheel in the opposite direction.
