How to Reset the Change Oil Light in a 2005 Chevy Equinox

How to Reset the Change Oil Light in a 2005 Chevy Equinox

You can reset the change oil light on your 2005 Chevy Equinox right from your home garage, saving yourself a trip to the dealership or mechanic. When the "Change Oil" light illuminates on the Chevys instrument cluster, it is because an error code is being sent to the On-Board Diagnostics II (OBD II) computer from a sensor in the engine. You can reset error codes using an OBD II code reader. This computerized device can be purchased from any auto parts store. Make sure you reset the computer after you have finished changing the oil or you may risk damaging the Equinoxs computer.

Instructions

    1

Locate the OBD port that is the same size and shape as the OBD scan tools connective end. This OBD port can be found on the underside of the drivers side dash next to the steering column.

    2

Plug the scan tool into this port. Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the "On" position, taking care not to start the engine. This will power on most scan tools. But if not, locate the "On" switch and turn it on.

    3

Wait for the scan tool to retrieve the codes. Locate the "Delete Codes" or "Erase Codes" command and select it.

    4

Unplug the scan tool after the computer has been reset. This will be indicated by a reading on the menu of the scan tool such as "Command Sent." Start the engine. Check to make sure the oil change light has turned off on the instrument panel.
