How to Lubricate Fuel Line Fittings

Improper lubrication can lead to fuel fittings leaking fuel into a vehicles engine compartment, potentially causing major damage to the vehicle or severe injury to people in the area. Proper lubrication allows the fuel line fitting to slide together without tearing the delicate o-rings designed to keep fuel from leaking from the connections. Special lubricants are not required as they can contaminate the fuel passing through the finished fuel line connections.

Instructions

    1

Wipe around the end of a male fuel line fitting with a clean rag. Inspect the o-ring sitting in a groove 1/8 to 3/16 inch in from the end of the fitting.

    2

Pull a damaged o-ring off the male fuel line fitting. Push a new o-ring on the end of the fitting until it seats in groove running around the end of the fitting.

    3

Dip one finger in clean motor oil. Run your finger around the o-ring until it is coated with a thin layer of motor oil. Allow the oil to sit on the o-ring for three to five minutes.

    4

Slide the male fuel line fitting into the opening of a female fuel line fitting.
