How to Remove a Vibration Damper from a 3800 Engine

A 3800 engine is a six-cylinder, 3.8-liter engine manufactured by General Motors from 1991 to 1995. It appears on many Buick vehicles during this period, such as the LeSabre. The 3800 engine has a crankshaft damper, also known as a vibration damper. This device reduces the vibrations caused by the spinning crankshaft and prevents the crankshaft from failing. The procedure for removing the vibration damper is similar for all vehicles with a 3800 engine.

Instructions

    1

Remove the cable to the negative terminal on the battery with a socket wrench. Raise the vehicle, and support it on jack stands. Disconnect the right wheel assembly with a lug wrench.

    2

Disconnect the right splash shield from the vehicle with a socket wrench, and remove the cover for the flywheel.

    3

Connect Flywheel Holder Tool J 37096 to a socket wrench, and attach this assembly to the flywheel to secure the flywheel in place. Remove the mounting bolt and its washer from the crankshaft damper.

    4

Attach a crankshaft puller to the crankshaft damper with 1/4-inch bolts. Pull the crankshaft balancer and damper from the front of the engine with the crankshaft puller.
