How to Reset the Check Engine Light on a 1995 Tacoma

Reset the Check Engine light on your 95 Toyota Tacoma using an OBD scan tool, which can be obtained from any auto parts retailer. When the Check Engine light illuminates on the vehicles instrument panel, it is because a sensor in the emissions system or engine has detected a problem. These sensors send diagnostic trouble codes to the on-board diagnostic computer (OBD) which, in turn, turns on the Tacomas Check Engine light. Always properly diagnose and fix the problem before resetting the light.

Instructions

    1

Find the DLC port on the drivers side dashboard underneath the steering wheel. It is the same size and shape as the connector on the OBD scan tool.

    2

Plug the OBD scan tool into the DLC port but dont force it in -- doing so will bend the pins inside.

    3

Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the "On/Off" position. This will power on the scan tool.

    4

Wait for the scan tool to communicate with the OBD computer. Scroll through the screen using the arrow keys and find the "Delete" or "Erase Codes" option. Select this option.

    5

Wait for the main menu to reappear on the screen of the OBD scan tool. This will let you know that the command has been completed.

    6

Unplug the scan tool and start the engine. Verify that the Check Engine light has turned off.
