How to Remove the Coolant Pump of a 99 Jetta Glx 2 8 6Cyl AAA

The Jetta is a small family car that Volkswagen has manufactured since 1979, and the third generation of this series includes the 1993 through 1999 models. The GL trim level for the 1999 Jetta features Volkswagens AAA engine, a six-cylinder 2.8-liter engine with two valves per cylinder. The coolant pump for the 1999 Jetta circulates water and coolant through the engine to prevent the engine from overheating. To remove the water pump from an AAA engine, you will need an engine hoist to access the coolant pump.

Instructions

    1

Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal with a socket wrench. Place a container under the radiator drain and remove the drain plug. Drain the coolant from the radiator and replace the drain plug. Disconnect the air cleaner assembly.

    2

Mark the accessory drive belt to indicate its direction of rotation. Hold the drive belts pulley in place and remove the drive belt. Disconnect the the exhaust pipe from the catalytic converter with a socket wrench.

    3

Remove the mounting bolts for the coolant reservoir and move it out of your way. Disconnect the mounting bolts for the rear engine mounts and the coolant pump. Raise the engine from its rear mounts with an engine hoist and remove the coolant pump.
